Owner description: Experience the threat of nuclear war at York Cold War Bunker! On a fascinating guided tour, learn how volunteers would have played a vital role in ensuring that Britain could survive a nuclear attack. The atmospheric 1960s semi-subterranean bunker is just as it was when stood down in 1991, and the one hour guided tour is enhanced by a short film. Winter opening: Every Sunday, admission by guided tour at the following times: 10.00, 11.15, 11.45, 13.00, 14:15, And 15:00.

“An educational and interesting place to vsit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

This is a really interesting attraction = located in the Acomb area of York to the west of the City centre (a local bus from the station to "The Regent" leaves you a 5 minute walk to the bunker) It is fascinating to see how the ROC members would have lived if that awful occurance had happened during the cold war - all the rooms are as they were and would have been - well worth a visit.

“What if there had been a nuclear attack?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

A fascinating relic from the Cold War period, saved from demolition/decay by English Heritage. Situated quite close to York City-centre, during its active-life the Bunker was staffed by Royal Observer Corps personnel who would have monitored radioactive fall-out in the event of an attack. The guides are knowledgeable and the information available gives a fair picture of what it would have been like to serve there. Probably not buried deep enough to withstand a near miss, but undoubtedly intended to help maintain public morale at a difficult time in British history.
Definitely worth seeing.

“Absolutely Fascinating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012 via mobile

The bunker is a lot bigger than I was expecting it to be and a whole lot more interesting too! The guides were really knowledgeable and they did a great job of explaining the chilling history of the bunker, really bringing it to life. They've obviously got a real passion for the place and they were very happy to answer my questions. I'd recommend this to anyone. It's great value too!

“The perils they saved us from .........”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

In the 1950's, 60's and 70's we were at war. OK, so it was not a 'hot' war, but a cold war and frightening none the less. There was the '4 minute warning'; the M. A. D. (mutually assured destruction) philosophy of defence amongst others.
All is carefully described by volunteers from English Heritage in a one hour tour. (Entrance is free to EH members)
