Having spotted Goji when it first arrived on the cafe scene in York a few years back and had positive experiences, myself and three family members (2 of us veggie, 2 omnivores) returned for lunch after a break of a year.
Goji occupies a good spot - it's a short walk from the centre of the city, but far enough off the beaten track that on a Sunday lunchtime it was not heaving. We wandered in and waited ten minutes to be seated, though when we did sit down we noticed the garden space - where we would have been happy to sit given the pleasant weather- was completely unoccupied.
The menu at Goji is interesting and varied, with a core of 5-6 dishes and a similar number of specials every day. They cater for specifically for dietary requirements including those who need gluten free meals or have allergies and the menu is clearly signposted. There are enough interesting options to tempt those who might be initially unconvinced by meat-free food. Similarly, there's a wide selection of drinks, many of which are sourced from specialists. The ambiance is pleasant and even on a busy day it's easy to have a quiet conversation. The walls are decorated with the work of local artists which are available to purchase.
Unfortunately, on this occasion the positives did not extend to the food or the service. Our waitress seemed busy and flustered - she struggled to bring over drinks without knocking anything over. When one of our party commented that there seemed to be a fly in the milk she said, "Oh, that's not a fly, it's just a petal, but I can get you a new one if you want?" Whatever was in the milk seemed to have wings, and even if it was a petal if the waitress had noticed prior to our pointing it out I would have expected her to replace the milk without being asked! Throughout the rest of the meal the quality of the service was adequate, but slow and inattentive. We waited to order, we waited a considerable length of time for our food, waited for dessert menus, waited for dessert, and by the time we wanted the bill, I decided that walking up to the deli counter to pay would be the quickest way forward.
I was also disappointed by the food, which has been very good on previous visits. The salads were overdressed. The veggie platter was greasy, though the hummous was very good. My curry advertised itself as a vegetable curry with brown rice, but was more than half potato and accompanied by white rice. The vegetables did not taste fresh and were overcooked. Dessert was better - we had a very tasty raspberry and chocolate brownie torte and some bakewell tart - but there are plenty of places in York where you can order good cakes.
I will return to Goji, but on the strength of previous meals there. If this is typical of the current offering, there are plenty of better restaurants in York.
