“Great location but poor property”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2011

We stayed at number 30 for half term. There was 5 people (can sleep up to 6 !). The whole property is looking very tired. Only one bathroom to share between us all with an old mira shower which was pathetic! Toilet seat falling off, bed extremly uncomfartable. The owners would be well advised to visit their property and maybe apend some money on some renovations.
On the plus side the site is in a great location in Whitby. Love the area ! hated the property !

This is our fourth visit to the site, it is lovely and quiet but perfect for families. There are lovely playgrounds for younger kids and a great swimming pool. The site is next to the River Esk and early morning is a great time to see the salmon leaping out of the water. There is plenty to do around and about but you do need a car. A great place to stay what ever the time of year

Room Tip: Book early all the houses are good

Booked" Haven cottage" no15 through Hoseasons, and although its in the same area as captain cooks haven i think its privately owned. The pictures looked lovely on the website and lived up to our expectations. The quality of bedding, towels and furnishings were all good quality. Its in a lovely peaceful area but only a lovely 20min walk along the old viaduct into Whitby. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day break and wished we had booked longer.

As a family we stayed in a caravan at this park - valley view caravan !!!
Didn't have double glazed windows / tap in kitchen leaked / heating was pathetic - had to use boost button to warm caravan then it only lasted 2 hours - the nights were really cold - not ideal for a young baby !!
On a good note - area nice

Room Tip: just don't book the caravan

The location of this cottage was wonderful. We booked number 21 for myself, daughter and grandson and managed to get a late deal ,only paying £275 for a week in September. Our cottage was on the lower level near the river and every morning and late afternoon the ducks came right up to the door waiting to be fed. My grandson especially enjoyed watching the steam train go by several times a day, the play areas and small swimming pool all on site. There is also a cinder track which runs over the viaduct and leads into Whitby, one way and Robin Hoods Bay the other.
The cottage itself was cosy and comfortable, the only gripe being the kitchen which is very small and basic. There is no dishwasher or washing machine although there are washing machines available near the reception at the top of the site.We also missed the fact there was only a microwave/combination oven available and would have preferred a regular standard oven for cooking. This is not luxury accommodation but bearing in mind the price we paid and the location of the cottage ,it was very good value for money and we would definitely stay there again.

This was the first time we have stayed self catering but cannot not fault it
The Captain Cook's Haven complex of 42 brick built houses is just outside Whitby - with panoramic views of the "Cinder Track" Viaduct and the River Esk.
Clean on arrival "Adventure Cottage" has three bedrooms comfortably sleeping six, (four adults and two young children in our case), television, microwave, cooker, fridge, gas barbecue etc. Ample cutlery, crockery, glasses etc. There is a children's playground and a swimming pool with free access.
Gas and electricity are includedx
The whole complex is thoroughly recommended if you enjoy the freedom of self catering.
What to take? Take too much - if you don't need everything you take it is a bonus.
Don't forget -Whitby is in England and has English weather.

We were really looking forward to staying in a Cooks Cottage. On arrival the complex looked really tidy and it is situated out of the way of hustle so it is lovely and quiet. When we walked into the cottage everything looked nice and modern but the first thing we had to do was clean the kitchen. Later on in the evening when we set the dishwasher water came pouring out from under the kitchen sink which tripped the electricty for a second time! On closer inspection there had obviously been a problem for a while as the cupboard casing was swollen. The u bend was leaking onto some electric sockets. Needed to wait up for an emergency electrican but it was sorted. We were not happy with the cleanliness of the accommodation as there were filthy doors with pubic hairs on them and the bathrooms were not clean either, the bedroom blind was broken, there were no oven glves and to be honest the list can go on. We spoke to the lady on reception the following morning and she was rather abrupt and not receptive to the fact we wanted to complain. Some of the issues were rectified but there was still a ring of scum around the bath. As the week went on we realised as we wanted to use items things were missing from the kitchen a sieve, no sharp knives not enough pegs to hang out the washing etc but we were not prepared to stay in to report things anymore as the reception is only open for an hour a day. The beds were clean but the sheets had holes in them. There is parking for 2 cars but only room for 1 outside the property, The other has to be in a parking area up the road which is not great if you have a young family. Do not promise young children they can go swimming until you have checked the pool is open first. It should be open daily until 6:30pm but it was closed one day for some reason and another day during opening times for cleaning when no one appeared to be there. Finally £10 was not enough to wash and dry two small loads of washing in the launderette. We did end up having a reasonable holiday but would not return to stay here.
