Don't be fooled by the pictures or the reference to "helpful friendly staff", on the website.
The George is a run down pub with rooms, not a Hotel.
The staff, with the exception of the cleaner, are unfriendly and not particularly helpful.

The reception process was abrupt almost to the point of rudeness but not quite, it all seemed too much trouble, no eye contact, no welcome, just "sign here, no smoking or takeaways in the rooms, your room is up there!

The room was small, the carpet was stained, the bathroom was cleanish but spartan, nowhere to put your toiletries, no robe hooks. On the plus side the bed linen was very clean and so were the towels, and the tea and coffee making facilities were good.

The room was at the front of the building and was very noisy, the windows are single glazed and suffering from a lack of maintenance, as is the rest of the place.

The continental breakfast was very basic and the dining area dark and cold.

We were fortunate that the karaoke and evening "entertainment" didn't really disturb us too much but I think that was a case of a few quiet nights and not the norm.

At £70 a night including the so called "complimentary" breakfast The George is definitely NOT good value for money.

We would definitely NOT recommend this place and would NEVER stay there again.

I just wish I taken more time to read the reviews before booking.

The George, is, in the centre of town, but that really is the only thing in it's favour.

Whitby is a good place to visit, don't spoil your trip by staying at The George!

Room Tip: Book at the Angel Hotel.

Staying on my own on business, clean room with no disturbances, decent breakfast and great to be just opposite the train station so no long walk with my bags.

Helpful staff and a good sleep, Thanks i'll be back if I come to Whitby

This really isn't all that bad, rooms are clean and fairly spacious. This is my second stay here and both times I'd say the experience was the same even though there are a couple of years between visits which to me means they take care of the property and standards are kept.

We arrived around 13:00 and was told that we couldn't check in as the rooms we were staying in still needed to be cleaned after the previous guests, no big deal as I didn't think we'd be able to get in until around 15:00 which is the norm for most hotels these days.

Once checked in by the polite helpful staff we made our way to the top floor (room 19) and found it to be just as I remembered from last time although I'm sure they have fitted a new double glazed window. Beds were clean and so was the shared bathroom, rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and some biccies.

The bar downstairs is open quite late at the weekends but although you could hear the bass in the music it wasn't enough to disturb my sleep or my 2 mates as their snoring would testify!

One thing that did disturb my sleep was the bed! Quite uncomfortable and lumpy and short! I'm around 5"10-5"11 and my poor little feet were a poking out the end!

Showers were hot and powerful so no complaints there and overall bathroom facilities were good.

Now to me B&B means you get a breakfast in with it too which technically you did but it was only toast and cereals and by all accounts you could have a fry up but at a cost so we all ended up at the local cafe as we'd eaten there before and knew it was worth paying for!

Overall not a bad place to stay

Bad points, uncomfortable beds and an average breakfast

Good points, close to train station and harbour (if you're fishing), nice rooms and friendly polite staff, hence 3.5 stars

Room Tip: There's a lot of fairly tight stairs after the first floor and no lifts so if you do struggle wi...

A party of twelve. We would like to say thank you for a really good Easter weekend. Staff were great, really friendly and helpfully. Rooms good size, clean. We were on the second floor. In the morning you had road traffic noise, but not to bad. We will return

We arrived mid-afternoon and first impressions weren't helped by a very faded and peeling sign on the side of the hotel and a crowd of Goths in the very dark bar making a great racket. A disinterested looking lad behind the bar jerked his head in the direction of reception (hidden away up some stairs). Our bedroom - a twin - was extremely cramped. We had to keep the one, small window closed at night because of external traffic and other noise - which was horrendous!
The shower mouldings were harbouring mould and the shower itself was hardly big enough to turn round in. The complimentary 'continental' breakfast was sparse (basic boxed cereals, fruit and juice - no yogurt or muesli) and we noticed that the fruit bowl had not been replenished on our our 2nd morning. There was a fed-up looking girl on duty behind the coffee bar who had to be asked to put out a rubbish bin for discarded cereal wrappers, and the floor felt sticky underfoot everywhere we walked (although that may have been due to the type of floor cleaner used). The one saving grace about this pub (we couldn't call it an 'hotel') was that it had a back 'residents entrance' so that we could escape without enduring the public areas. To cap it all the so-called 'free wi-fi' didn't work and no-one seemed competent to find out why.

Room Tip: Don't go there.

Went into Whitby to find a pub with sky sports so we could watch the hull city match. We bought a round for 6 of us and politely asked the barman (big guy with pony tail) what match they were showing. His reply was without eye contact and he refused to tell us which match, if any they were showing. We decided to have one drink and leave but soon discovered other supporters who were expecting to watch the match so we asked one of the female bar staff who was very pleasant but had to ask the barman who still didn't look up but eventually grunted yes. We decided to stay and at 5.15 we asked if the correct side could be put on. He argued that the match didn't start until 5.30 but did eventually turn it over just in time a 5.20 kick off. Throughout our time at the bar no empty glasses were collected and his customer service skills were non existence suffice to say we will not be returning
