My girlfriend and I had the misfortune of staying a night in the Grantley House Bed and Breakfast.
Booked 5 days in advance and was informed that OUR double room available was on par with all the other double rooms. When we arrived we made our way past a chap who was smoking at the front entrance (turned out to be Martin one of the owners)
After 4 flights of stairs we arrived in what can only be described as an after thought of a room in the attic.
When I asked for an alternative room, Justin (other owner) informed me that this was the only room available. (Yes he looked guilty)
The room was a bad joke with a sloping roof and veluxe windows, very badly painted yellow emulsion over a patterned wall covering, and a mix match of furniture with a portable TV plonked on top of a of pine chest of drawers.
There was a third single bed under the eves along with another fold up bed behind a side board which gave the impression that this room is part bedroom part storage space, The en-suite was just as badly fitted out with poor paintwork and ill fitted linoleum. There was a strange padlocked white cupboard enclosure less than TWO FEET from the pillow, we later found out to our detriment when trying to sleep that it actually housed the filler tank as part of the BB’s water system. It continually trickled like some sort of Chinese Water Torture. It also rained that night which sounded like someone “tap-dancing” on the veluxe windows.
I hereby quote the Grantley House‘s OWN room description.
ALL of our King, Double, Twin and Single rooms have newly refurbished en-suite facilities, along with LCD flat screen TV's with Sky Freeview. Bedrooms are tastefully decorated, and enjoy a high standard of cleanliness. You are assured of a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Breakfast the next day must be said was very good with a variety of cereals, fruit and a nice cooked breakfast.
Paying for the room on our departure Martin enquired “was everything ok? “ I informed him that the room was “not up to scratch” Which was met with silence … now it was Martins turn to look guilty.
The owners even had the gall to charge full standard rate for a very sub standard room.
We look forward to going back to Whitby which is a lovely place and would recommend it to all providing they don’t stay in the Grantley House roof space.
