“Don't be put off by the facade!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We often walked past this restaurant but we never realised that the main dining area was not visible from the street. When we actually walked in we found a warm welcoming restaurant and bar area with a nice romantic atmosphere.
The food was good although we did experience a problem when they forgot to send our starters order through to the kitchen. They did redeem themselves however by taking 50% off the bill which was less than the bottle of wine we had. We enjoyed the experience so much that we compensated for the 50% discount by overtipping at the end.

“The 'take us as you find us' quality remains intact”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

I used to frequent WHG a few years ago with my diving club. We were regular visitors and always enjoyed the unique ambience created by Stewart Perkins and team ... but this week's visit followed a 7 year break. The relaxed, quirky, 'take us as you find us' feel is still intact. I ate too much, and drank too much ... so all in all and excellent night!

Don't go here if you expect a Whitbread-style offering, you're on a tight budget, enjoy Tesco ready meals, or expect highly attentive service.

Do go here if you have taste, manners, a sense of humour, and an adventurous spirit.

“Fantastic food and atmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Just to say many thanks to all the staff who provided excellent customer service on our recent visit on New Years Eve. Despite being one of the restaurants busiest days all the staff we encountered were very customer focused.

Following Stewart's guidance, we chose the Fillet of Beef for two, which was absolutely delicious. Table service was second to none and the whole dining experience was really enjoyed. We have dined at the White Horse and Griffin for the last five years and this last culinary experience is certainly the best.

Thanks to all the team, a special thank you to Stewart.

“RIp off, too expensive for plain pub food, bad attitudes, never again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

We walked in and were told to come back in 15 mins to a table that was empty before we were told to come back!
We spent £70 on 2 courses at lunchtime. We wanted to order the fish platter at £48 for two but were told by the chef, who just stood around in the bar, that they didn't have enough fish and we'd have to prebook a few days ahead (in the fishing town of Whitby!).
We both went for you the fish pie at £15 each which was so bland and lacking in fish that a £2 Tesco fish pie is much nicer and fishier.
The manager seemed very moody and started spraying the tables and banging the chairs around while we waited for the bill. What a rip off, never again, steer clear!!!
