What a jewel Whitby museum is - not only does it house an art collection but it is home to the fantastic, the amazing and the surreal. I found a thing of rare beauty --- a museum in the style of my childhood. Where the exhibits are housed in polished wood cases (the smell of wood and polish brought back so many childhood memories of the Haselmere museum). There was so much to see from c18 spectacles to the jet worker automaton and of course the gruesome Hand of Glory . There is a huge amount on Captain Cook (a former Whitby resident) but for me the jewel in the Crown was the deliciously named Tempest Prognosticator a device for predicting storms and is typical of the adventurous minds of those curious men and women of the long eighteenth century. It is a place to spend a day in there is so much to see. There is a sweet little cafe in the basement that does food and very well too. A return visit is on the cards.
