“A nice find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

The weather in Whitby was not up to much so we decided to pop in here for an hour or two. Was a very interesting visit, was quite surprised how much stuff they had. I would say it's not for young kids as they might get a bit bored. Certainly worth a vist.

“Don't Miss This Museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We had 4 hours to spend in Whitby and we had not planned how we would spend the time. By accident, we happened upon this museum and decided to stop. It was well worth the time spent and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Whitby. It is very well planned and the information and methods of displaying the historical information are excellent. There are also activities and displays to appeal to children so I would not hesitate to take students, etc.

“A Great Little Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

A "must do" for any Aussie.

Lots of interesting exhibits ... and although the museum is small, it needs a good couple of hours to do it justice.

The guides were helpful and you can get a good photo along the river from the museum courtyard.

PS. Don't forget to use the toilet before you leave the museum (saves looking for one later)
:-)

“Very interesting.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

Despite being a bit of a history buff, Captain Cook was not my specialist subject. However, this very informative museum was a great help in understanding the development of this great man. One very interesting puzzle is how Cook (a strapping 6 footer- like me) managed to share the attic room with 16 other colleagues!! Well worth a visit.

“Ruined by staff rushing us out before closing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

The museum was advertised to close at 5pm and we appreciated that arriving at 4:15pm we would only be able to rush round, but still expected to be able to read some parts at our leisure during these 45mins.

However, on arriving the staff said they would be closing in 30mins (despite the closing time being 15 minutes after) and we agreed this would be fine. However, what was not fine, was being almost literally chased around the museum by a member of staff hurriedly locking every nook and cranny along the way eventually politely asking us to leave at 4:40pm, in addition to 5 minutes being taking up by being spoken to that we had to "be quick" and our York Pass information taking a long time to be recorded.

As for the museum itself, there were some interesting bits of information, but there did seem to be little in the way of artefacts and most information could easily have been found in appropriate books.

Please accept my apologies for the very poor experience you suffered during your recent visit. It is certainly one that we are neither proud of or would expect any visitor to have to go through. To get to the heart of the problem and ensure that no-one else suffers as you have done it would help me greatly if you could let me know the date on which you came to see us, please email me at
