“Fine coastal bike ride - but the Cinder Trail badly needs maintenance in places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

We cycled from Scarborough to Whitby on the Saturday, stayed in a b&b that night, then cycled back the next day. Signage is excellent and some of the views are spectacular - but there are several sections of the trail which badly need maintenance (e.g south of Robin's Hood Bay as the trail starts to climb gradually to Ravenscar, and again south of Ravenscar as you start dropping down towards Cloughton). The Sustrans map correctly shows the route as being in bad condition in 3 or 4 places: it suggests it's only passable with mountain bikes. That's not strictly true - we managed OK with a hybrid (her) and a light cyclo-cross bike (him), both with a single pannier of overnight gear - but given the number of people walking and in places running or cycling the trail, North Yorks County Council really ought to level some of the deeply-rutted sections and also resurface some with some new loads of cinders, before the route really deteriorates.
Great teashops etc en route: Cloughton was our favourite (in both directions), Hayburn Wyke we didn't try this time, the hotel at Ravenscar was fine & has a great location overlooking Robin Hood's Bay (though the Ravenscar Tea Rooms were sadly closed) and both pubs at the top of RH's Bay where we called in for cups of tea on cold but clear days were welcoming & warm.

“Lovely, easygoing walk (whitby to rhb)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

Did this walk today, really enjoyed it. Stopped halfway at cycle hire for a drink. The views were beautiful and the track flat and easy to navigate.

Lots of wildlife on the way, and different views, forest, fields, rivers and sea. I imagine it could get quite muddy after a lot of rain. I tracked the distance and it was 6 miles to the top of rhb.

We walked there and got a bus back, which run about every half hour until 6pm then hourly(ish) until 10pm mon-sat.

Only thing is the starting point isn't as indicated on map, but there is a sign for it there (look for the cinder track up past bagdale hall).

“Whitby to RHB”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

This is a very pleasant walk and very easy going when compared to the coast path, and would have been great if we'd got our bikes.

“Easier Alternative to Coastal Path”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

We walked the 6 or 7 miles from Whitby to RHB.
Nice flat path for easy walks, with occasional nice views.
Path edges is a little overgrown in places, but wide enough.
A bike rental place nearer the start in Whitby could be an improvement.
