“Great Hotel, Great Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

Stayed at this hotel for a few nights, when we arrived we had a great welcome and was showed up to our attic room, Bagatelle. It was very cosy and had everything we needed. Hotel looks small from the outside but has more rooms than expected. Weather was good to say it was February when we stayed.

Breakfast was amazing, must be one the the best full English breakfasts I have had (had it 3 mornings in a row). Staff very friendly and always happy to help.

We stayed an extra night and was moved to a different room. It was a lot bigger and the views were great.

Centered in the centre and very near to Whitby Abbey which we visited. We would definitely visit Whitby again and stay in the hotel again.

Thanks for a great stay :)

Our friends took us to this pub as a treat a couple of weeks ago. It is adorable inside and very cosy with a really good menu.
I ordered the lobster and frites which didn't disappoint and my fellow diners had fish and chips which looked amazing and I was told that the fish tasted so fresh.
The only thing that let's this place down is the rude and obnoxious waitress who greeted us with a snarl, spoke to us like we were morons ( especially when SHE got the wine order wrong) and generally looked at us with distaste..definitely more training required.
The waiter however ( not from Whitby as he had a different accent) was absolutely lovely and very polite.
Highly recommended but perhaps avoid when the 'Waitress from Hell' is working (for ref, we went on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm)

Room Tip: We didn't stay overnight but the pub itself is delightful

We really enjoyed our stay at this homey place. The location is good, it's near the shops and just 500 meters walk to that historic castle ruin or something. The staffs were really helpful and nice! They did their best to help us. We went to Whitby on a freezing winter season, not really a good time to wander but to my surprise, our overall stay was great, thanks to White Horse and Griffin. Their food was amazing as well! We stayed there 3 days and 2 nights and we only paid £125 (2 sets of breakfast for two and 1 free dinner). Their room was really clean and the hot water iwas always available. The pressure of the water was really good as well. I would highly recommend this place if you want to stop by at Whitby. :)

The downside: We stayed here while they were renovating or fixing something so it was a bit noisy coz of the hammering.

spent a couple of days here last week, weather atrocious but warm welcome and great service! very good offer.....2 nights B & B plus 2 course evening meal on the first night for £125! room basic but clean and bed very comfy! great place if you love old buildings (we do). food was spot on, cooked to perfection and good service, loved my stay here and will definately be going again.....when weather improves!

Room Tip: we stayed in the 'wakefulness' room.....comfortable enough but a bit noisy 1st thing as over...

Two nights in the wind and rain of Whitby..............with the most amazing mince filled Yorkshires (by the Market place not the hotel) and some superb original but traditional cooking at the WH+G

Research(1st floor - maybe quieter upstairs) the rooms - our was slightly noisy and the electrics blew buyt sorted in less than 5 minutes.

We just loved the food and with the best Fortunes kippers for breakfast - best if you go and enjoy

IF you want really traditional they do say there's 300 places to get fish and chips in Whitby, well maybe but it is not hard to count 60!!!

Room Tip: Probably ask for the large twin room (beds together - or not!!)

Difficult one this....

The hotel is in a great position, over the bridge on the old side of Whitby. Couldn't be better placed and there is a car park just over the road (£6 for 24 hours). The staff are helpful and the hotel is old and not at all chocolate-boxy. So far - should be brilliant ( and I promise I give praise pretty freely) but there is something lacking.

The only two things I can put it down to are a) money - it feels like the hotel is being managed and run on a shoe-string and b) it really lacks the touch of someone that could add comfort and style to the rooms and the hotel generally.

We stayed in one of the attic rooms and it was large and could be fantastic but there was a bathroom REALLY in need of investment plus two old, worn sofas in the bedroom that I just didn't want to sit on. The room was clean but unloved except the bed which was new with lovely crisp bed linen. See what I mean about good but with big bits missing that would make it great?

We had a meal in the restaurant as part of the deal we were on and that was fantastic. Well cooked and tasty. No complaints at all about that but let down by the fact that even though it was fairly quiet it took ages to serve us and the room was chilly (the waitress said they had run out of coal for the fire)

We had a lovely stay in Whitby (one of my all time faves) but it just felt sad to me that the hotel could be one of the best and instead it just feels average. Please, Mr/Mrs Owner just invest a little more and also find someone that can help you make the rooms feel more inviting and stylish - I promise you could do it without spending a fortune!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
