“"what a lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

Just returned from a lovely two night stay.It was a groupon deal so wasn't accepting much. But it was very nice and clean. We had an evening meal there on the first night and was so happy with the high standard of food what we received we ate there on the second night too. Also I would like to say our lovely the owners were and staff.Nothing was too much trouble .We was given a free bottle of wine on arrival. The breakfast was also lovely and well presented.I would like to thank everyone there for a most injoyable break and will pass on to all my friends and family. We will defiantely go again .

Just returned from another great weekend in Whitby. This time we stayed at the White horse and Griffin with a groupon voucher, what a deal it was.The accomodation and food ( we only had the breakfast, but after reading the reviews we should have tried the evening meal. ) was excellent. We even had our personal weather forecaster in the waitress who served our breakfast! It seems like the new owners have done a great job in the renovation. We stayed in a room overlooking the cobbled street and was big and had king size bed, tea and coffee provided.Would recommend to anyone having a holiday in Whitby.

We stayed at The Black Horse and Griffin for 2 nights and would certainly recommend it. The words 'charming' and 'quirky' were very apt. Our room, with twin beds, was enormous and we loved the large sofa - so often you only get one comfy chair in hotels.
The food was wonderful - I opted for the full English on the first morning and the smoked haddock and poached egg on the second - both delicious.
If you're a light sleeper, it can be a little noisy as the floor boards above us did creek and the beer delivery one morning was very audible but, since we were in a 17th Century hotel, right in the centre of Whitby, what more could you expect!
The shower was an experience - a bath with a shower attachment would be more accurate, but for such a lovely couple of days, who could complain?
Oh, I must mention the wonderful staff there too - everyone so cheerful and helpful.

Just come back from a short break in Whitby where we stayed in the White Horse and Griffin, it was a Groupon deal which we had booked for just one night, after the breakfast in the morning we were left wishing that we had booked the two night deal. The room that we were allocated overlooked the narrow street and shops, the room it's self was massive, a king size bed with a sofa at the end of it, flat screen tv and drinks facilities. Breakfast in the morning was lovely, there was a big choice on offer and endless toast and coffee being offered by the staff. We will certainly be staying there again and would recommend it to anybody.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
