My husband made a reservation for us in the restaurant upstairs for my birthday on 27 Jan following recommendations from colleagues regarding the food.
Residing in Scarborough we're reliant on Tripadvisor reviews and word of mouth from acquaintances. Bar staff were welcoming in a "non stuffy" manner, the ground floor restaurant was very busy - however, I felt slightly overdressed as other diners were adorned in walking boots, fleecy jackets etc. admittedly, this was late afternoon.
Disappointed the "specials" blackboard displayed an array of lovely dishes which upon enquiry were in fact "un available" .............if you don't have a dish - DON'T display it!!! Other eateries remove items from the specials board when unavailable. We may have left and chosen to eat at Greens had we known prior to ordering drinks at the bar...............could this be the reason for not removing? Once people are seated and drinking often they can't be bothered to move on and opt for "second best" or something they didn't really want to order.
No mussels, no scallops, no chicken wings ..............no stuffed cod! Wouldn't order chicken wings anyway however the other dishes suited my palette and was left disappointed.
Love the chunky modern metal handrail to the restaurant on first floor...........sorry! Did I say restaurant? It felt like an upmarket cafe. Why oh why give paper napkins in the restaurant? FABRIC please! Paper downstairs.
We shared calamari and prawn entree which was nice and enough to share. Calamari was like velvet! Prawns extremely succulent - batter could be lighter, tempura style would be better. I had to hastily reorder my mains as the cod with sun blush tomato was "unavailable" - I chose plaice with stir fry vegetables with lemon and caper sauce...........
The waitress was super, she asked chef to fillet my whole fish and it wasn't a problem. However where were my vegetables? Stir fry veg to me conjures up more than carrot batons and peas!!!!!!
My husband was really impressed with his mains - a speciality to the restaurant and rather quirky! Steak on a hot stone! Literally! Arrives like a raw piece of meat and cooks on the block of hot stone to your liking! You manage it's cooking!!! Terrific idea! He opted for rump and I have to say it was superb! The steak could be mistaken for fillet. Accompanied by chunky yummy home made chips, onion rings, salad and a cute diddy pan of blue cheese sauce.
.......but it was my birthday and my menu choices were not there, when the blackboard suggested otherwise! Too late once drinks ordered.
The food prices are standard for any reasonable eatery (some a little expensive - £7 for a starter is verging upon good class restaurants!!) however I want fabric napkins for these prices and a "non cafe" feel.
We paid £62.50 (Ouch!! not worth that!) Which included 2 large glasses of wine and one shandy as my husband was driving.
I could imagine this would be a good place for people to drop in for a drink and bite to eat with friends - not for couples or families in my opinion.
I'd come again, wouldn't eat in the restaurant as the atmosphere better downstairs and only if I "happened" to be in Whitby wanting something nice to eat in a spare of the moment way..............with other places being closed first.
