We decided to go and visit Whitby at the very last minute and found ourselves looking at Prospect house on laterooms.com. It looked like just what we needed and had very good reviews. The only room available for the two nights that we wanted was described as being 'compact'. This didnt bother us as the price obviously reflected this and we only needed it as a place to sleep!
We tried to book via late rooms but it wouldnt let us as it was gone 9pm. We tried on the off chance to phone through and Wendy answered the phone. We made the booking and Wendy gave us advice on getting there and where to park. She also said it didn't matter if we got there early, just ring the bell or if no answer- give her a call.
We arrived just after lunch time and found very convenient private parking to the rear of the building. Wendy greeted us and made us feel very welcome. Great first impressions all round. She showed us to our room which, as advertised was on the small side, but was ample for what me and my partner wanted. However I would say that I think the 'larger' person may struggle to manoeuvre around the bed without the clothes rail getting in the way. Also the shower which was fine for the both of us, may be a squeeze for some. despite its size, the facilities in the room were plentiful. TV (terrestrial channels only), DVD player, tea making facilities, glasses, bottle opener, hair drier....... everything you would expect. Nice touches were a welcome folder with information on the local area, and a selection of DVDs on the landing.
The bed was comfortable, and we had a good night sleep both nights. I was worried that the immersion tank in the bathroom cupboard, which was quite near to the bed would be noisy - but it wasn't and we didn't even know it was there most of the time. The bathroom was clean and a suitable size for the room.
On the whole, we were very pleased with this room, it was clean, tidy, warm, well decorated and comfortable.
The town centre is about 10 minute down hill walk from Prospect house. The walk back is a bit tougher as the hill is fairly steep. it didn't bother us too much though.
We were asked to tick on a menu what we would like for breakfast the night before and leave it on the hall stand. There were plenty of options and the impression I got, was that if what you wanted wasn't on there, Wendy would go out her way to do it for you. Breakfast was fantastic. The first morning I just had a sausage sandwich as I'm not keen on full English. But after seeing the other half's, I ordered it for the next day. She, on the other hand did not as she was still full from the morning before!!
In summary, Whitby is a lovely little town with plenty to see, some lovely pubs and nice places to eat. Wendy does a fantastic job running this place all by herself.......although she does cheat with the gardening ;-)
Will definitely recommend Prospect house and will come back here when we visit whitby again.
When you book, just make sure you read the room description and be aware of what room you are gettin...
