“great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

We stayed 26th to 28th Oct 12.We parked the car for our stay as free paking available. 2 minutes walk to pubs, shops.
Room clean and warm and I enjoyed having our breakfast in our room rather than going down stairs. Breakfast was lovely, full english for £5 bargain.
We would visit again as very friendly.
Couldn't have asked for more!

Room Tip: We stayed room 3 which over looked a park across the road.

The Rylstone Mere guest house is Victorian built property which is only a five minute walk to the Quayside, my wife and I stayed here for three nights (01 to 04/10/12). Upon arrival we had the choice of a number of parking bays which was a bonus as there are many similar guest houses that do not have any parking facilities. There is a raised patio area on the front of the building which is ideal for relaxing and people watching in the warmer weather. We rang the doorbell and were met by one of the owners who introduced himself to us as Watty. He welcomed us in and offered to carry some of our luggage as he showed us to our room on the first floor.
We stayed in Room 1 which was spacious, well decorated and spotlessly clean, and had television. There was ample tea, coffee, milk and biscuits provided all of which were replenished on a daily basis, a touch I was particularly grateful for. There is nothing worse than having nothing to make a morning cuppa with, we have stayed at hotels that charge a much higher tariff and skimp in this area.
The bed was king size and very comfortable to lie in and the linen was clean modern and fresh and there was plenty of storage for our clothes. The room had an ample sized radiator which we had to turn down to minimum so judging by this even in the depths of winter the room will achieve an comfortable temperature. The en-suite bathroom was fully tiled and had a modern suite with large shower tray and thermostatic shower. The en-suite was of a size that I would have expected, I am fairly heftily built and I never struggled for space. Mould in corners and grout is one of my pet hates but there was no such evidence of that here. There is no excuse for this if adequate ventilation is provided and a cleaning regime. The rooms were serviced every morning by Michaela and she must be given credit for paying attention to such detail. It was also pleasing that hot water was always available whatever time of the day.
Watty has a wealth of local knowledge and is the man to speak to if you want to know where the best attractions are, where to eat, the best pubs (and the ones to stay clear of) and cheapest beer!
A nice personal touch that is provided is that breakfast can be ordered the day prior, it is prepared by Michaela and brought to your room by Watty. I can definitely recommend the smoked haddock, I had it twice and that’s from someone who never bothers with breakfast! The full English is more than ample size and certainly better quality and price than you’ll find at the café’s.
All in all, this guest house offers excellent value for money. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Whitby in a convenient location that offers good hospitality and cleanliness you can’t go wrong if you book the Rylstone Mere, we will certainly be back for one of the many themed weekends that Whitby offers. Thank you Watty and Michaela for a relaxed and lovely stay!

A beautiful guest house with friendly hosts, who greeted us on arrival and waved us off when we left. The room was a budget room for a very cheap price,it was compact, spotless and very tasteful. We will definately be stopping there again but will be stopping in one of the deluxe rooms. Parking a plus too.

We stayed here for the first time of visiting Whitby and found this to be an excellent B&B our room was small but we were only here for 4 nights so it didn't matter so much, the bed was lovely and comfortable the room was clean and best of all a lovely home cooked breakfast all with fresh ingredients, It is only a short walk from the main part of Whitby.

This room was extremely clean and tidy! That could not be complained about!
However... When we arrived we was shown to our room which was surposed to be a 'superior double' - I dread to think what a normal room was like! This room was modern but very small on the 3rd floor it felt like we was in an attic room. The worst part was that the bathroom was at the end of the bed! No curtain or door so there was no privacy what so ever you could clearly hear everything from the toilet and bare all to get a shower! Another major point for us was that there was no plug sockets anywhere near the mirror which was not great while trying to get ready for a night out!!! The lady that owned the B&B never spoke to us she was never interested in making conversation and couldnt even manage a smile! This could be a lovely B&B if they sorted the bathroom situation and welcomed their guest! Far better places to stay in Whitby!!!
