“We only lasted one night due to the smell of drains in our room.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2010

This is a beautifully presented hotel in an exquisite location but unfortunately the people who run it lack the vital ingredient in running a successful hospitality business - they do not mind what you experience.
We were staying in 'Louis' which is blighted by a strong smell of drains. On arrival we opened all the windows and my builder husband set to trying to resolve the problem, filling bath and sink traps and trying to locate the smell. Each time we came back into the room we were assaulted by the foul smell. We did not sleep much. After breakfast we asked if the smell was in all the rooms and were told just ours and the ladies toilet (very obvious), and it had been a problem for a little while! We asked to change room for our second night, which was not possible and we were offered air freshener! There was no way we could stay another night, so we checked out. There was no apology and no offer of compensation.
How could we want to go back or recommend a place where the people care so little about your experience.

Expected a lot from this hotel after looking at website. Our room was not clean with dead flies in the window sill and dirt under the shower door. Room was uncomfortable as was most of the hotel with posy furniture everywhere but little comfort. The heating was not on in the evening although it was November and we had to ask for it to be put on. By 10:30 it was off again. The menu was very ambitous and although the food did not quire match up to it, it was still a very good attempt.

The Valley Café (The Woodland Hotel, Sandsend) – What a beautiful restaurant! It is only small but perfectly formed. We went for our anniversary lunch and had an amazing time. The young waitress that looked after us was friendly, knowledgeable and a pleasure to meet. The décor is French shabby chic and works beautifully with the building and surroundings. The food (crab risotto) was superb, very flavoursome and creamy. The desserts were beautifully presented and tasted divine. We will definitely go back there the next time we stay in Whitby. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Thanks for a lovely dining experience.

What a gem of a hotel. You get into sandsend, a beautiful un-spoilt part of the coast, load of free parking along the seafront, pull of the main rd and down a small lane past quaint little cottages, all of which are beautifull, 2 goats, ducks and pheasants. Right at the end you come to the Woodlands Hotel. Greeted by the daughter who owns the bistro.very polite and welcoming. Fantastic room, gave us a form to order breakfast choice I had a full English fry up including , perfectly cooked bacon, choice of scrambled poaches of fried eggs. My partner had Kippers but there was also Srambled eggs with Smoked salmon, medley of mushrooms on Toasted soda bread just to name a couple, all these accompanied with cereal, fresh fruits, toast and marmalade, fresh orange and beatifull fresh filter coffee, as they did not have beans on the list I wrote requesting them and the folowing morning they gave me some, I believe these people try to go that little extra to ensure you are happy. This family owned hotel/ boutique is a jewel surrounded by the gems that make it so special. The Bistro , family and location make this a place to be, ITS A BEAUTIFUL , CLEAN, SCENIC CHARMING HOTEL, AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS, The Bistro food is top notch with a good choice of wine
If I had to pull this hotel down ................I am sorry buy I cannot find any thing bad to say . Sansend
The beach is smooth clean and pebble free, with 2 small resturants .It is a five minute drive to Whitby and costs £7.50 in a taxi at night if you don't want to drive.
Before we left today we have already booked to return next year, If we can get back this year we will.
Hope this helps you decide, by the way we looked at hotels on the harbour at Whitby befor ewe booked the Woodside and believe we made the best choice , as the harbour front is noisy at night and in the morning so unless yo are a heavy sleeper I would not recommend Whitby harbour area.
Sorry no photos, BUT YOU GOT TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF ANYWAY.

We stayed here for a weekend getaway, and almost didn't want to share the secret! The hotel is in a beautiful spot in the beautiful village of Sandsend within easy access of lots of places up and down the coast. There are only about six rooms so it is on an intimate scale, each is decorated to a high standard and in a different style. I would highly recommend our room 'Isabella' as it has a double aspect, with woodland and sea view. The 'Valley Cafe' housed within the Hotel serves guests a wonderful breakfast, with ample choice available. It is also open for lunch and early evening meals, it gets very popular and it can be advisable to book. There are also a few tables in the pretty garden where you can enjoy a pre-meal drink or possibly eat? The food is excellent in quality and is presented with lovely attention to detail and for our money had the edge on the more expensive 'Estbeck House' a short walk away.

Stayed for one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The setting of this hotel is idyllic, only 3 miles from Whitby but in a different world set away from the road next to a babbling brook with ducks. The hotel is small but beautifully decorated and the owners daughter runs a fantastic little bistro. The only minus point for us was the size of the bed and the fact that there was no top sheet. So on a warm night it's either full quilt or nothing and being of average size found the bed a bit cramped. Would definitely stay again, the wood behind the hotel is fantastic to walk in.

We arrived quite late on but upoon arrival were pleantly pleased with our choice and that was before we went inside!Once through the entrance we were greeted with a nice warm smile and shown to our room which was the Isabella room. The room was very clean and had a lovely feel to it,the bed was so comfortable and the slipper bath just made the room! The only disapointment (which was my partners disapointment!)was that it did not have a t.v in the room which was due to no signal but they did have dvds which you could borrow. They recently have just opened there valley bistro and we have to say that the food was out of this world so fresh and all homemade it was so nice and atmosphere was so chilled and relaxed and after diner they have like a chill out room where you could have a few drinks. The location was great nice little quaint lane with lovely old houses with ducks roaming around a five minute walk down to the beach and a ten minuite drive into whitby. We had a lovely weekend and we will definatley be visting the woodlands again.
