“A Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

Really enjoyed staying here. I was suprised as I'm used to "chain" hotels or the ultra-quirky family-run hotel which either lack personallity or are a little over the top. I like a happy medium of friendliness without the proprietors sending you a chrismas card and kissing you goodbye (it happened!)

Really comfortable and clean rooms. Fresh milk supplied in a thermos flask which is a bonus. The welcome tray was well stocked.

The meals and beer were both excellent and if the weather happens not to be good then who cares The Lion has it all under one roof!

As soon as we got to The Lion we were very well looked after by all the staff how were all very polite and friendly. Our room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Even though we were at the front of the hotel we didn't find it noisy and slept very well after our lovely evening meal at the restaurant. There was lots of choice and they were big portions, great value for money. The hotel was a great location for everything we wanted to do and see and all the staff had great local knowledge. We will definitely come back and will recommend out family and friends to go and stay!

My friend and I and her large black Labrador had a one night stay after climbing Pen y Ghent on saturday 26 th Feb, and can recommend the Lion to anyone. We were met with a warm welcome, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The hotel is dog friendly and they really made a fuss of him!!
The room was immaculate and facilities top notch. Quiet and clean.
We ate in the restaurant in the evening and can do nothing but praise the staff and the Chef! The food is excellent, plenty of choice and in handsome portions.
Good atmosphere, friendly, funny and helpful staff, definitely going back!

Stayed here recently, the hotel is beautiful with very friendly helpful staff, the room we stayed in was rather small but nice (as opposed to great). The only let down was the breakfast, there was no veggi alternative to sausage, bacon and black pudding so as ever the vegetarian pays full whack for a lesser and seriously boring breakfast. Insult was added to injury when you realise there is a brilliant organic shop opposite the hotel selling a wide range of veggi sausages, burgers etc. There was decent veggi choices on the menu for lunch and dinner, no such consideration however for paying guests who had booked in advance and bothered to request a veg option.

I stayed here for just one night with my husband and our dog. We had a friendly welcome on arrival and really liked the character of the restaurant and bar area an of the corridors leading to our bedroom. We had a dog friendly room but it was still clean and very well decorated. The only minor thing was being above the kitchen where we could hear fans and music - we were in room 4 - but this all ended by the evening time. We ate in the restaurant and the food couldn't have been better! The menu was simple 'pub' type choices but cooked fresh with very high quality ingredients - the fish and chips were especially nice. I would only comment that the price for the bedroom was quite steep as we paid £105 which included £15 for the dog. I read that some of this goes toward a pet charity. In saying that I think it was worth the price when considering the standard of the rooms, the bar and the food!

We came here in February in a large family group (19 of us - adults and children) to celebrate our mother's 80th birthday and this turned out to be the perfect setting for it. The hotel is easily accessible (no parking but cheap car parks just around the corner), has a lovely atmosphere as soon as you walk in (lovely open fire and welcoming surroundings). All of the staff were very friendly and helpful from start to finish, and were very accommodating in allowing us to personalise and decorate the room we were using for the evening meal. Ian, the manager, could not have been more helpful, particularly at breakfast time when we were all seated together and all had different breakfast orders - nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were lovely, with character, all a bit different, and the beds were very comfortable. There was a good selection of family, double and twin rooms available.
Would definitely recommend!

We stayed at the Lion for one night as we had booked a Falconry day at the nearby Falconry centre. As soon as we walked in through the door we were instantly impressed by the ambience - a lovely mix of traditional features (the huge roaring fire was very welcoming) and fresh, tasteful decor. The room was a delight - simple, yet elegant - the huge wooden 'sleigh' style bed was extremely comfortable and the room and bathroom had all the comforts you need in a hotel room.

We opted to eat at the inn that night and were pleasantly surprised by the dining area (more like a restaurant in feel and character). The food was very good quality 'comfort' food - my starter of 'Goat's cheese stumpie' was the highlight for me - my partner was very taken with his main of Thwaites beef suet pudding. The service was good - attentive without being over-baring.

Following a good night's sleep, we had a delicious breakfast - I'm really fussy about fried breakfasts but this was tasty and well-cooked - not greasy like they can sometimes be.

I would definitely stay at the Lion again and would have no hesitation recommending the Inn to friends or family visiting the area.

Room Tip: We had Room 15 - which was very nice - and at the back of the hotel so probably a little quieter tha...
