“Joint favourite in Norwich”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

joint favourite in norwich

Caley’s Coca Café is located in an old building in the heart of Norwich. In the distant past it was a courtroom and the building still retains some of those features today. A wide and varied menu caters for most tastes and it’s a speedy service by efficient staff. Caley’s chocolates were a prominent business in Norwich but it is a very small operation today and you can purchase a variety of chocolates at the counter. A good place to visit. We have two favourite cafes in Norwich, Caley’s Coca Café and No: 33 [see separate review]

“Lovely Hot chocolate on and autumn day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

I tend to find hot chocolate a bit on the sweet side and lacking in chocolate on the palate. Not so here, we visited Caley’s on two separate occasions for good sized mugs of hot chocolate which came with a top-up.

Situated within the old Guildhall in the old meeting room, bedecked with Caley’s posters from bygone years. We succumbed to their gentle selling and bought some chocolate and chocolates to take away.

“Lovely location, but a missed opportunity.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

I've not been to Caleys for a while. The building is amazing of course, the old Guildhall and Court room.
Good things: I love all the leaflets that are in the foyer area, theatres and cultural events in the area - it's a nice touch.
The interior is amazing, don't forget to go to the toilet even if you don't actually want to go, you get to go up the stairs to where the Judge used to sit (that's not where you go to the loo of course!)
I thought it was much friendlier than it has been in the past, we had a lovely friendly chatty waitress, the service was quick, and the cakes were delicious and very reasonable. It all feels quite genteel and sort of out of this world.
Bad things: The music - the music is awful and ruins the atmosphere. It turns what should be a very special place into something mundane and it means that I cannot give it a very good even though it deserves it in other ways - PLEASE change the music and have something more in keeping with the surroundings.
I've always felt that Caleys is missing something, it could be so much better. It ought to have an exhibition area, maybe in the foyer about the history of Caleys chocolate, and with those surroundings it could have special events, tea dances, etc.
It sells chocolates, but if there were prices up, I couldn't see them for looking, it used to sell jars of hot chocolate but not anymore - it is a brilliant branding opportunity which is missed, they do sell lovely mugs, but everything is scattered around the place instead of being presented in once place - Caleys is better than it was, but could be so much better than it is, however this is not a reason not to go there, it still feels like a treat.

“A place of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

So nice to go to an old building that doesn't have the mass-produced bland decor of the big chains, and although this place is not particularly cheap they are serving quality products. The staff did make a mistake with our order but they sorted it out for us. If we weren't on such a tight budget we would probably have indulged in more of their chocolate, which looked very tempting. Going to the toilet was a bit of an adventure which involved folding back banister rails and seating in the raised veranda that runs around the cafe, another nod to the history of this quaint old building.

“Lovely atmospheric place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

What a lovely setting this is for lunch or a tea/coffee. Set in the old guildhall they have kept the decor as it would have been. There are tables and sofas and an upstairs with would be nice to sit with a coffee. My mum and I went in for the first time for lunch and had a jacket potato with baked beans and salad. It was a nice surprise that it was table service. Would've liked a few more vegetarian options.

You can also purchase Caley's memorabilia such as mugs, hand made chocolate etc.

Would definitely recommend and go back.
