“Very Odd”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

The George hotel is a perfect location for visiting the city.

On arrival, the receptionist was very welcoming and polite. The room itself had just been decorated it seemed, so was fresh, modern and extremely hot !! It appeared that the maid must have switched the heat on full and forgot to even open a window, it was like a sauna !! So once we cooled it down (it didn't cool down at all through our stay) we decided to go to the bar with colleagues for a drink and meal. What a mistake.

To arrive with us having a private conversation and the barmaid to say 'well i wish Id have known you lot were here, you need to book or you won't get fed'. This was just the beginning. I have never experienced such a rude waitress in all my time staying in hotels. I asked for vinegar at one point, for her to shove it to a colleague at the end of the table and say pass that to him, abruptly. The best was at the end, when she said to her colleague, Thats great these 'insert swear word' will be here all night now. The food was very nice though I must say.

Breakfast was the same frosty treatment, she couldn't hear my order apparently as she was tired as she was working the previous night.

Another colleague had a broken door, which resulted in the waiter breaking it down.

Its ashame as the hotel itself was quite nice. Just a pity for some staff. A bout Faulty Towers like

Thank you for your recent review. I am so sorry you found the waitress to be so unhelpful and abrupt, I can assure you this is not the norm for our hotel and this issue is being dealt with.
Please let us know if you are returning to Norwich anytime soon so we can offer you a far better and much improved experience.

We stayed for one night over Easter. Found the staff very friendly & helpful, especially the night porter, who was very busy upon our return, this did not stop him being pleasant & cheerful as he served us. Reception was very polite too, &
extremely prompt in bringing more coffee to our room when we asked.
We didn't eat there, but the menu seemed very nice. Our room was lovely & big. Very comfy bed. Thank you.

The hotel was very drab and I can only describe the service as similar to Fawlty Towers. We were made to feel as if we were causing an inconvenience when asking to book a table at dinner as they were "busy". 3 couples eating in a hotel restaurant can hardly be classed as busy. The waitress barked orders at us to the point where we were loath to ask for anything either at dinner or breakfast the following morning. I was given some milk for my tea from another table as they realised I hadn't been given any and I was very reluctant to ask for any. The food was actually quite pleasant, but definitely spoiled by the lack of customer service. It took forever to get a shower as the water was almost cold and dribbled out so I couldn't wash the shampoo out of my hair, I ended up using a plastic cup over the wash basin. The room was absolutely roasting, but the radiators were turned off, so I had to have the window open all night. There is free WIFI, however it didn't stay on for more then a minute or 2 at a time, so I gave up.

The room was dark and dingy and also very small. We were glad we had a toy poodle with us and not something bigger. The room, especially the bedding was not clean. The room also had a distinct fishy smell, a water damaged ceiling and walls and a serious insect problem (Mitie traps on the floor in the bathroom!) This is probably not the place you want to take your dog, let alone yourself! To be fair, the staff were courteous and the breakfast was consistently good. Did not have evening meal there. The hotel is well situated for the centre of Norwich and is a ten minute walk from shops and amenities.

I'm really not sure where the good reviews have come from here.

Location is good, and it is a peaceful setting, however:

Room was very worn - curtain was ripped and wallpaper was peeling
Shower was just a dribble of warm water, except on one day when no hot water would come out at all (cold shower before work - yay)
Breakfast staff seemed very dissinterested (apart from maybe the guy) - had to ask to be served after sitting at our table for a while

Won't be back.

I use this hotel every couple of months. We have social events (I am the Chairman), most usually in the large room and the restaurant staff serve around 20 to 24 guests. We put them under pressure, but they are always very helpful, polite and accommodating. Unlike Holiday Inns in the area they do not charge £100 for parking either, which also helps. I have not stayed in the rooms, but the restaurant, bar area and the attitude are all first rate, so I will be recommending this hotel to my clients and guests in the future as opposed to Holiday Inns.

Very nice and peaceful location. Travelled alone on business for one night. Room not very spacious but very comfortable and clean. Staff very helpful and friendly. Would definitely choose to stay there again.
