“Funny place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

I eat lunch regularly, albeit not frequently, at Number 12. It's a funny soulless place by day - occasionally a big party in, but more of than not a small number of business diners. I have on occasion been part of the only "group".

The food is pretty good, modern, not too fussy, albeit for lunch a little over-priced. The recently introduced lunch menu is hardly one of those "two courses for £15" jobs that one sees in some places trying to increase the covers.

So, I like it, it's a bit dear and a bit quiet (Pizza Express 100m away always buzzing!). Correlation?

“Classy, attentive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

This restaurant is attached to the Ambassadors Hotel, on the northern boundary of Bloomsbury. The ambience is classy modernist, the food European fusion. I had the most fabulous sea bass, lightly char grilled and served on a bed of grapefruit and fennel salad. Pam’s first choice of tuna sadly was sold out. Instead she had Scottish salmon from the grill menu, cooked to perfection and delicious: served with a green salad (in place of the chips) and a portobello mushroom. We shared a chocolate and hazel nut tart, which was just as well, as we barely finished international between us. Rich and gorgeous. The wine was fine, and not too pricey. The bill: about £70 and worth every penny. An attentive but not obtrusive staff catered to our every desire, and OK it was very quiet the night we went, but you get the feeling they know what they are doing front-of-house, as well as in the kitchen.

“Lovely afternoon tea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

I went here today with a friend for afternoon tea. The sandwiches were lovely and not dry, tasted fresh. The scones were delicious and warm and the rest of the cakes were equally as good. The service was attentive and the staff were friendly. Both me and my friend had an enjoyable afternoon here.

“Not impressed!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

First visit a year ago was ok - tried the restaurant again this week and to be honest , we were both very disappointed! Carpaccio to start was frankly bland. Goats cheese starter was ok but was certainly not the best. My wife's main course - ribeye-steak - was returned for being well over-cooked. The second attempt was acceptably cooked but an extremely small portion.

The service was polite, but we felt very rushed!! Starter to finish of maincourse in under 50 minutes? Not what I was hoping for.

The bill came to £112 and to be honest, I felt somewhat cheated!
