Golders Hill Park is part of Hampstead Heath, but like its grander nearby sister, Kenwood, it has a character all of its own. A real family park it has attractions for all ages; beautiful formal gardens, interesting walks, tennis courts, a small but well stocked zoo with a deer enclosure, a large and recently refurbished adventure playground with sandpit and a butterfly house (restricted opening times).
Atop all this at the summit of the park is the most delightful chalet-style cafe with a huge terrace where seating is always available regardless of the amount of customers there. You can enjoy anything from an excellent coffee and Danish to some first class home-cooked Italian pastas, salads and generously filled rolls and sandwiches. Everthing is made with first class ingredients and the staff are friendly and helpful; I saw one of them offering to carry an elderly lady's tea to a table for her.
Although there is seating inside the terrace is the place to be because it is so full of regulars of every age that there is a warm buzz of familiarity.
The Refreshment House is not only top of its park but also top of its game. Other park cafe operators should study, learn and at least try to copy.
