Description: Originally opened in 1927, the Rex Whistler Restaurant was described as 'The Most Amusing Room in Europe', owing to its specially commissioned mural, The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats. It has been the site of political and social intrigue over the decades, as well as gaining a reputation for having one of the capital's finest wine cellars. With a nod to its heritage, head chef Nathan Brewster serves traditional British dishes inspired by menus from 1927 to the present day. Wine list of the year 2014 The Tate's wine cellar has long been famous for its extensive collection of fine wines, half bottles at exceptional prices. The cellar is curated by Hamish Anderson and he is delighted to make recommendations and decant wine prior to your arrival.

“Very good lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

We lunched here on a day trip to London and were very pleased. The room is lovely; service was excellent - informal and attentive. The restaurant is calm and has a very pleasant ambience. The menu offered an interesting choice and food was well cooked, and tasty with reasonable portions. Wine was good. I would definitely use the place again. Best to reserve, I think as it was pretty full on the Saturday we were there.

“a really lovely lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

We just had one course, but it was so delicious that the meal felt like a special occasion rather than just a bite to eat. First-class ingredients, accurately cooked and served with imagination and flair. We took the recommended glass of wine for our menu choice, and it was a perfect match. Very, very good value, the whole thing.

“Lovely ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

We enjoyed our lunch here at the weekend. Yes the mural surrounding you as you dine is superb, loved the colours and scenes.
The menu is limited to just a choice of three or four dishes per course. The information given about the dishes and or ingredients, adds to the pleasure of choosing. We choose the lemon sole and the goose... both were relishes after the tasty salmon starter.
My son had been recommended here as he had beentold that the wine list was extensive and worth sampling, so he chose to accompany each course with the recommended wine, he thoroughly savoured each of them. I do feel he would have really enjoyed seeing a list from which to choose rather than having to ask the waiter and peer at his list and ask to hear the name and year again.... I believe it would add to the experience to read that for oneself and have it along side the menu.
We chose the apple and quince tart.... beautifully served however the pastry base was rather hard and unable to break through it with a spoon we each picked it up!
So, overall, a very pleasant time...the service was a bit slow at times but improved as we went along.
We would return.

“Great for a special lunch.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

Down the fascinating new spiral centre staircase, and there's a Friendly welcome at this great restaurant. Careful and attentive service, a beautiful room with the wonderful Whistler Mural restored and in fine shape. Comfortable seating, sparkling cutlery and glasses, superb wine list, great value set lunch with three courses for under 30UKP, a firm favourite.

“Standards after refurbishment have stayed high”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

I was visiting the new members room and decided spontaneously to have lunch in the refurbished restaurant. A great job has been done on the mural and it was also pleasing to find that the high standards found at my last visit of food and service had been maintained. This remains my favourite place for lunching alone. It is equally splendid with friends.
