“A Venerable Institution”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

We took lunch here. Sweetings is an institution, the atmosphere is unique to the City. You will meet City gents, many with incongruous cockney accents.

The smoked eel and Dover sole were superb together with spinach and chips. The lobsters were of very good size and delicious.

Avoid specials such as fried assorted fish which had been under The hot lamp too long.

The spotted dick was traditional and pleasing. Do not expect this to be a cheap experience
but as a treat not to be missed.

“Stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

This place is amazing. Simple as! We had an absolutely stunning meal here. Its very unique. We went in and were greeted by the host, fifteen minutes wait he told us so we went and had a drink at the bar. Bitter in old tankards? Excellent! The barman recommended an excellent Rose for her. Ten minutes later we were escorted to our table in the back. The building itself has so much character, even down to the monogrammed furniture. I'm not usually a fish eater so i asked the waiter what to go for. He said either the skate or the herring. I went with the skate and was so happy i did! A very flavoursome and meaty fish that just fell off the bone! We shared a potted shrimp starter and she had a fish pie for main. She Loved it as much as i loved my skate! This place is unique and we will be back next time we are in London.

“Good fish, fun experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

Prepared to be seated elbow to elbow with strangers as you dine on good fish and enjoy the great characters who serve as waiters. The atmosphere is well worth the visit - and assuming you like fish the food is worth it too. Not sure what you would eat if you don't like fish/seafood. It's small and packs people in, but that is a large part of the charm - as is the old fashion dumb-waiter you can watch in the back room. Lunch starts (and they are only open for lunch) with bread that arrives pre-buttered. Chalk boards on the wall detail the specials, and there are too many fresh options to make up your mind. As American business people, we were probably one of the few tables not enjoying a bucket with cold white wine to compliment the meal - we really ought to learn something above enjoying a meal from the Europeans shouldn't we? Not a cheap lunch, but well worth doing if life takes you to London City for business.

“City Institution”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

Wonderful, traditional fish restaurant that will out-live me! A place anybody in the City has to experience at least once. It's busy, loud and lively, and a mecca to fish and seafood. And if you don't like fish, they do serve Welsh Rarebit ;-)

“Great expectations; didn't disappoint”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

Ok so we pitched up here last Friday later than expected so it was nearer 1pm than the 12.30pm we had planned. End result of this was that it took us about half an hour to be seated. Despite this, we enjoyed waiting as it gave us a chance to soak up the atmosphere, observe what the other diners were ordering and have a drink at the 'bar' which was nothing more than a countertop with a few bottles on a shelf. And that's the beauty of this place and what makes it such a unique dining experience. We sat at a long table and shared with a number of other diners. To start, potted shrimps were good and my colleague ordered whitebait to see if it was as good as the whitebait she gets back in Aus - it wasn't but there were no complaints! Smoked Haddock with poached egg and mashed potato was very tasty, egg cooked to perfection. Dover sole was superb. Didnt have time for pud and they don't serve coffee so we made a our way, pleased to have experienced this delightful old timer. Long may it continue.
