During the course of their European holiday a couple of friends of ours came to London from New Mexico.
Due to marches in the centre of London, we decided to take them for an early dinner to a pub with lots of history outside of central, hence choosing the Prospect of Whitby having been there many times in the past.
In short, we really wish we hadn’t. It was such an embarrassing experience that we are still apologising to our friends for what was a terrible couple of hours attempting to get a meal for four people.
We had booked a table and this was dealt with well, but after that, the evening just fell apart. The two people that served us obviously had no restaurant experience and frankly, couldn’t speak English (we attempted in the end to order in Spanish)
We were asked 4 times if we wanted to open a tab, even though we repeatedly told them that we had one already open. My wife and I ordered the same thing off the menu and even pointed to the item and said that we wanted two items. The meals arrived with our friends getting what they ordered and my wife and I having two different meals. We pointed out the mistake and they took our plates away, returning some time later with two meals that didn’t have what was shown on the menu. It was taken away again and the waiter took our menu to show the kitchen staff what the plate should have contained. Our friends embarrassingly picked at their food while we waited for ours to arrive. When it finally arrived, it was virtually inedible and we didn’t really touch it.
At no time were apologies offered or a member of the management staff ask if they could do anything to resolve the situation. I have contacted the pub and asked for details of how to make a complaint but haven’t received a response.
It’s a shame. We used to use this pub a lot when travelling up to London for the evening, but we will give it a wide berth now.
I shudder to think what our American friends must have thought of the evening
