“First visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Great concept. They looked after us - a big group of 14 - very well. Catered for the veggies in the group admirably. Good wine list and smart help on what would go well. Hard to get tables for such a group in lots of places but it did not faze them at all.

“Like nothing I've ever experienced!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was incredible. Every dish they brought out (I think we managed around 15 different dishes between our party of 8) was great, and they kept on coming! It came to £70 per head including a fair amount of wine, which was very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food!

“Variety is the spice of life”

Great combo of inspiring chinese food and local neighbourhood restaurant. Go for the leave it to them selection of lots of small dishes which were all great. Budget about £75 per person including drinks and service which is very efficient

“Something different (in a wonderful way)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

We were pre-warned about the menu-free experience at Hunan, and it was almost perfect. It is a fixed-price place (about £50 per person) and for that you get 18 courses (or more if you can handle it, and are prepared to pay a £4 supplement). These range from the simple but brilliant (deep fried green beans with garlic and chili) to the more exotic (frogs' legs and various types of seafood in a variety of amazing sauces).

When you arrive, you are asked if there is anything you can't/won't eat, and your tolerance for spice (we said we would eat anything, and had no problem with spice, but it definitely wasn't excessively spicey). They then start to bring little one-bite dishes according to the chef's choice that evening. If there is anything you particularly loved, say so and they may well bring another plateful.

The one thing that stopped it from being perfect was the "main" course. We were offered a choice between sea bass or crispy duck (there is also, for a supplement, the option of a crab or lobster dish at this point). The crispy duck was not fantastic, and we were relatively full by this point anyway. If (i.e. when) I go back to Hunan, I will either go for the lobster or crab main course, or ask them to keep bringing the small plates (which were faultless, and they are apparently happy to do this).

Service was good but not over the top, and we were advised well in our choice from the extensive (and reasonably-priced) wine list. One more thing - not open on Sunday or Monday, and definitely worth making a reservation for the other nights as it is always packed!

“sensational taste experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2014

This was very different to any other Chinese restaurant I had been to in the past. It is quite a small place and very popular, so we had to opt for a six thirty pm sitting with a two hour window initially, but as we were a party of eight, we were concerned that it would not be sufficient time to really enjoy the meal without feeling rushed. We were going to cancel because of this. The staff were keen to accomodate us and not to loose our business, so asked to be given a couple of days to try to extend our time slot. We were very pleased that they managed to extend it by 45 minutes which allowed us to feel completely satisfied in every respect. We were asked if we had any dislikes and then the food just kept on coming! Each dish was about one mouthful per person. Each course had a completely different flavour. There was nothing stodgy or unpalatable. Just, mouthful after mouthful of deliciousness. The lobster course and the seabass course were particularly yummy! The staff were very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. It is not a particularly cheap night out, but definitely worth every penny. I look forward to eating there again on a future visit to the capital.
