When you dine at a three michelin star restaurant that charges £135 a head with the name Gordon Ramsay above the door you expect greatness, amazing food, perfect service and you want to leave feeling you've been somewhere special.
my father and I had a table booked for us as a gift, the staff were well aware that our meal had been paid for (menu prestige £135) but within 3 minutes of sitting down they tried to up sell us to the "seasonal" menu at £165, after we politely declined another waiter comes with a rather over the top Gordon Ramsay engraved box of very expensive white truffles and asks us if we would like to smell the truffles and order the truffle pasta at a £25 surcharge. the waiters also felt they needed to let us know that our desert was featured on tv series masterchef, the menu's also had a photo of Gordon on the first page. It does slightly spoil the ambience it just felt like a PR exercise for the Ramsay brand but i'm sure the heaps of japanese tourists in the dining room find it all very intriguing. we found the service was intrusive, the mark of a great front of house team is knowing when to talk to your customers and when to shut up and let them enjoy their meal; they failed this. Constant bombardments of "how is the meal" "would you like more bread" (2 courses in) "let me explain this for you" e.t.c and at their prices thats an issue. the amuse bouche arrives, and it tastes good but its not great, out of the seven course tasting menu only two dishes stood out, the roast pigeon was fantastic perfectly executed and the desert (lemonade parfait) was sublime. My fathers lamb was ordered medium rare, instead it came very rare which was a shame because the rest of the dish was super, a mention was made and they said they would notify the kitchen we didn't get a response after that. My Main issue is this; 80 percent of our meal was well executed and the presentation was faultless and the food is very good but when your eating food at that level, that 20 percent of your meal that isn't up to scratch will effect your overall experience in a very noticeable way.
We both finished our meal with the thought that its very good food but we felt its very "so what". the service generally is of a high standard but we found the waiters too intrusive and nothing blew us a way and that is why i have to say it was an average experience for £300 before drinks.
