I visited Automat on Sunday the 23rd of December for lunch as I have done previously on quite a few occasions. The food was to its normal high standard (the steak tartare is very good!) but the service was quite poor. From arriving without a reservation and asking for a table, to desert the service was far below what you would expect when spending £80 on lunch for 2. The feeling that was portrayed was that the staff didn't really want to be there, which is understandable given the holiday ahead, though no excuse.
Everything from previous ordered drinks, sauces, water, and sugar for coffee had to be asked for. We were never checked back on and as the meal progressed it became more difficult to get anyone's attention when something (like sugar for coffee, sauces, water, etc) was missed.
If nothing else at least we took some comfort in knowing we weren't alone. The table next to us seemed to receive the same treatment and were overheard discussing the same problems.
I contacted the restaurant near the time and heard a response back from the management. They kindly offered to send me something in return for the disappointment, something I did not expect at the time, but did appreciate given what was a painfully average experience. Nothing ever arrived, and I contacted the management to inform them of so. Nothing has been heard back since. At this point all I can say is that the poor service at automat extends beyond the restaurant floor; Promises should not be made to rectify a complaint if there is no intention to follow it through. The only rationale I can think of is to delay/avoid a bad review.
I will not be returning to Automat as there are far better places in London which offer better value and service.
