“Delightful Quaker Ambiance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

We much enjoyed our 1-night stay in the Penn Club with its great location near the British Museum. It was quiet and clean with a well-appointed room (except it would be nice to provide a second towel rack , and the large buffet breakfast was very good.. It seemed a bit expensive for a non en suite room (97 pounds), but it was nice to have a wash basin in the room. We liked the quiet Quaker ambiance of the lounges, the very helpful receptionists, and the availability of a public computer. The bed was comfortable and covered with a duvet which I ordinarily don't like because of the inflexibility of not having a separate sheet, but the night was cool enough that the duvet was not too hot.

The Penn Club isn't a luxurious hotel, a chambre d'hotes, a cosy homestay or a hostel. The furnishings are plain and simple, the paintwork slightly chipped, the carpet slightly old.
However it is a safe, calm, clean and friendly place to stay within 10 minutes walk from Euston and St. Pancras, a stones throw from the British Museum and very near to all the other "must see" sights of London.
We stayed in the double ensuite room in the back of the hotel with a garden view. The ceilings were high, the bathroom clean, the beds comfortable. No T.V., no radio but acceptable wi-fi. Laundry facilities are available in a rather spooky cellar!
The club is just what it says- a club, and the members are an interesting group. It is accepted that it is a safe place for people travelling on their own and we met several people coming to London to study, to meet friends and to indulge in a little culture. There is a long table at breakfast where people who wish to talk to their neighbours can chat.
Breakfast is good and there are facilities to prepare simple meals in the evening. Alternatively there is a list of nearby restaurants to eat nearby, and again if people travelling alone they can meet together and eat in company.
Some reviewers have been very negative about the place. They just "don't get it" and would probably be happier elsewhere. So would anyone who would prefer the atractions of a Holiday Inn or a Trust House Forte establishment.
We were won over by the club's quiet charm and are considering joining as members

Room Tip: Rooms with a garden view are probably better

The Penn Club was perfect for us. It is quiet, central, clean and affordable and all the people who work there are friendly and helpful. However, it isn't particularly nice, the furnishings are old and quite ugly, the internet is really slow, the beds quite uncomfortable, and the library (which I was really looking forward to) smelt a bit strange. The breakfast was good, although not outstanding. As long as you aren't planing on spending hours in your room, it makes a great base in an AMAZING location for exploring London.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the garden side, and NOT next the loos.

Before you stay here it is important to understand that this is not your average run of the mill accommodation. A clear Quaker ethos is central to the club, therefore you will find nothing showy, ostentatious, or tawdry. Expect instead slightly dated but quality furnishings, an atmosphere of gentle calm, total cleanliness, and simple fitness for purpose. The guests are (in my experience) delightful and varied, almost all with a story to tell, and with a shared appreciation of this wonderful place.
The staff are helpful and polite. Breakfast is cooked to order and there is small kitchen facility which allows guests to prepare and eat their own pre prepared meals...there is a Waitrose and also a Sainsburys nearby, so this is helpful to anyone hoping to 'do' London on a budget.
Someone else has rated this place a 'loony bin' on Trip Advisor. Dear me...that tells me so much about that contributor. I have found the Penn club a wonderful and nurturing place in the centre of London, it has a unique atmosphere, one which is obviously treasured by its more discerning guests.
I can only convey thanks and appreciation to the management team.

Room Tip: No lift, rooms on the lower floors best suited to those challenged by stairs. Rooms at the back hav...

We have stayed at The Penn Club twice and would recommend it to anyone wanting a Bloomsbury location at a reasonable
Price. If you are looking for an American style accommodation, this isn't it. There is no elevator and the stairs are steep but the rooms are clean and well maintained. The staff is helpful and the breakfast is great. I love their library with books and daily London papers available.

We stayed at The Penn Club as we could walk to the theatre and it seemed a quiet place in the heart of London. Our room was very disappointing, we felt we had been stuck at the back of the hotel. Our room was cramped with the bathroom a sort of big box extension in the middle of the room, no TV and poor Internet access in bedroom, and bathroom was drab. Breakfast was OK though limited choice, no porridge or yogurt but good full English. Maybe other rooms are ok, but don't stay in Room 2 on the ground floor!
Probably a good place for lone travellers as there is an opportunity to meet people in the TV lounge, but if you want modern facilities, there are better places and it's not particularly cheap for non-members. Won't be going again.

London is very expensive. My husband researched Friends accommodations, and based on the website we booked. The Club is in an excellent location (one tube ride from LHR), close to many fine amenities, and very quiet. It was clean, homey, comfortable, and very well kept. Each morning we enjoyed a full breakfast, cooked to order, and used the fridge and microwave to prepare lunches and simple dinners, which we ate in the dining room. We booked a double ensuite and were given a spacious first floor room overlooking a well kept, quiet garden. We go to the UK every year to visit family and friends, and decided we would apply for membership.

Room Tip: Yes, back rooms are quiet, but so is neighborhood. No lift, so take that into consideration.
