“Great Choice!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

Stayed 6-12 Sep 2011; stayed each year for 6 years.
BEST POSSIBLE LOCATION in LONDON for access to
Trafalgar, theatre, opera, museums, parks, palaces,
Thames, South Bank
Keep in mind this is student housing, not full service hotel

Many ADVANTAGES:
Easy to book and pay via Internet; fast check in by staff
Friendly helpful staff for registration and housekeeping
Two efficient relatively large lifts; rarely waited one minute
En suite: efficient student room + small modern bathroom pod
Large bath/hand towels replaced as requested
Well equipped shared kitchen with tea/coffee making
items,including refrigerator and freezer space
Plentiful hot water in both bath and kitchen
Bookshelves in lounge--visitor can leave unwanted books
and take any book left on shelves
Tesco Express at corner for water + breakfast/lunch items
St. Martin's in the Fields serves br/lun/din at moderate prices
(~8 pounds for large main course; other items
somewhat expensive)

Just a few PROBLEMS/DISADVANTAGES
Several steps up to registration; small open-deck elevator only for wheelchairs
Two minor problems: debris behind bed and broken lamp; corrected immediately by staff
Had free unlimited computer/Internet use in past; no longer available; now costs one pound
for quick, daily email check
Didn't use Wifi in student lounge

This was my second visit to Northumberland House and this time I was with my 7 year old niece. The room was lovely and clean with toilets and hand soap provided which was a bonus. The twin room was comfy and the right size for a stay where you spend very little time in. Beds were clean and comfy considering they were singles and I'm used to a double. The bathroom is a little pod which my niece thought was fantastic. That side the showers are amazing. No shortage of hot water and not too small that you can not wash properly.

The use of the kitchen(s) was fantastic. Only down side to this is not everyone returns their pots so sometimes you are short on a few things but after all this is student accommodation. Lots of storage space for food in cupboards and our kitchen had two large fridges and a freezer.

The only thing that let it down was the view, or lack of it. Our window looked out onto a brick wall and on the floor was lots of cigarette buts, cans and rubbish. Not nice and therefore we spent all week with the window and curtains shut. Not sure how easy it would be to clean this up but I wouldn't want to live with it as a student.

I would highly recommend this place just for the central location and lovely staff. If you don't mind basis but a little up from a hostel then this would be the accommodation for you.

Excellent location, right on Trafalgar square. Literally minutes from the Thames, the strand. I was upgraded on arrival so had the top floor and a view of the Thames, Big Ben, the London Eye. And wifi (which only works on the top floor, and the lobby).

Rooms are quite small, but not if you're European. Single bed, desk, bathroom type shell. Showers could use more pressure, but since you stand quite close to the toilet this could be bad if they did. The bed was uncomfortable, but for a few nights stay, it's definitely not worse than any hotel.

The bonus was the kitchen at the end of the corridor - if you don't feel like eating out in London, you can arrange to keep your breakfast here. Free coffee and tea.

For the price, this place and location is absolute heaven. You could not ask for better.

I came from the Eurostar, and it was super easy to get to. I got off at Leicester Square and walked rather than change to Charing Cross. Would not stay anywhere else in central london again!

Stayed at LSE Northumberland House for 1 night on 15th Sept 2011. The location is absolutely brilliant! About a 1 minute walk from Trafalgar Square, and a 5 minute walk from Charing Cross tube station. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was a big size, had 2 single beds which wernt the comfiest beds we've ever stayed in, but did the job for one night! Room was clean but carpet was fairly dirty. Only down side was the bathroom, think aeroplane toilet, and that was pretty much the size and style of it!!! Had to clock out by 10.30 the following morning, so was good that theyve got a luggage room as our train didnt leave until 7.30pm! Would definitely stay here again due to the location and the cheap price!

Keep in mind that this is an LSE hall of residence (a dorm for US visitors). I was in town for an LSE function and it is walking distance. That was the primary reasons I selected this place. I got the en suite single room. Rooms are extremely small but very convenient and well designed.

The hall is a couple of minutes walk to tube station and just next to night spots in London.

No internet in room if you are not a current LSE student but there's free wifi in the common areas. Also, there are coin-operated laundry machines in the basement.

In short, if you won't spend much time in the room and don't mind living a student life, LSE accommodation is the best value for money in central London. And if you are an LSE alumni you get further discount.

Couple: three nights in late September 2011. Fantastic location! You can't find anything that cost as little as this unless you are literally out of London. It is right across from Trafaglar square in the middle of London. The room was off decent size (we got the accessibility room so the bathroom was relatively huge.
Not much service (but not much service is requires anyway :) ). Wifi only in the lounge. And only available when school is out.
