“took good care of us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

I wish I could give The Cleveland a 4.5 instead of just a 4.

In my experience, what constitutes a good business is how the staff handles problems as they arise. There was a missed breakfast the first morning; after informing the front desk, our breakfast arrived on time each subsequent morning. I've been to places where the same mistake happens over and over again - I got the impression that would *not* happen at The Cleveland.

We checked into The Cleveland in the late evening and were given a warm and courteous welcome. Our room, Number 16, was on the second floor, which required either stairs, or elevator and half-flight of stairs. There is an espresso machine available in the lobby - very nice.

Our room was small by American standards, but perfectly fine for two adults. The closet/bathroom/kitchenette are all combined into a modular unit. The water pressure was *great*. The kitchenette provided everything we would need for our 5 nights there.

The view was of the interior space between the adjacent building. As we were only there to sleep and shower, I was fine with that. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. I don't think we heard any outside noise and I only heard (very muffled) noise in the corridor once.

The location could not have been better. The walk to the nearest Underground stations was 10-15 minutes. The walk to Paddington would have been shorter had the nearest entrance not been blocked for station reconstruction. We had to walk an additional two blocks around the station.

While I was there:
I wished there were more hooks - but the lack meant I actually hung things up in the closet, which kept the clutter down.
I wished the stools had been chairs with backs - but the lack meant I could move them easily and they didn't take up much room.

We stayed twice at the Cleveland on our recent trip, the first time in Room 12, the second across the hall in Room 14. Room 12 has more character since it includes an original fireplace and window surround. Room 14 is modern European and handicapped-accessible which meant the shower was the entire bathroom (actually that's sort of old European). Both rooms were very large, by London standards, and quiet. Each looked out onto a light well so it was impossible to know what the weather was. The rooms were very clean and the staff very helpful. The kitchenette is why we chose the Cleveland and it was very handy to warm things up and keep dessert and drinks cold. The bathrooms in both rooms also had light wells which was very nice to have natural light. The area where the hotel is located is upscale, as my husband said Porsche, Mercedes, Jaguars were many of the cars on the streets. It is a few blocks walk from Paddington Station, another big reason for our staying there, and near a couple Tube stations as well as restaurants and Hyde Park. Ideally located for us. We'll stay at the Cleveland again when we're in London.

Great room on first floor - quiet clean. Paid extra for Executive Deluxe Studio room as we stayed 5 nights - so had lots of room. Staff very helpful & friendly. Great location - have difficulty walking but had no problem getting to Paddington, Bayswater & Lancaster Gate Tube - even walked with luggage from Paddington. Enjoyed the walk from Kensington Palace thru to the Italian Gardens. Spent time here then back to the Cleveland.

Room Tip: If you need space suggest Executive Deluxe Studio room or larger

The staff at this hotel go out of their way to be of assistance. Barbara is an amazing woman to deal with, everybody knows her, and loves her. Her staff is well-trained, helpful, and really friendly.
The rooms here are clean and comfortable, and they all have a little kitchenette.
Three of us stayed here, each with their own room, and we were all more than happy with our room.
This hotel is on a quiet street, away from the noise of London city life. There are three Underground stations within a short walk from here. Queensway is a main shopping street a few blocks away, and Kensington Garden/Palace are really close.
Although the stairs can be an issue, I was in room 31 at the top of the hotel, for most rooms, access is not a problem.
A great place to stay!!!
If I return to London, this is where I'll be staying.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quietest. Room 28-31 required walking up stairs. Rooms 3 and 4 are in the bott...

When we were first arrived at The Cleveland we were excited. Situated on a gorgeous street in a beautiful building we thought we had it in a bag! But as soon as we got to our room, down the stairs we knew we were not happy. The room was dark, damp, airless and soulless. Our windows faced a wall and we couldn't even open them. The bed was fitted with cheap sheets and you could even see the mattress and base. Bathroom was also mouldy in areas. Carpet seemed new but smelt of damp.
The streets surrounding are beautiful and there is a great funky coffee shop up the road which was awesome! We walked everywhere from there too see all the major sights.

Room Tip: Try for a room upstairs maybe

It was quiet, and we got a great night's sleep. For a busy city like London we didn't hear a sound all night. Being in a renovated old building the walls are solid unlike new buildings were the walls are so thin. It was very clean, the kitchenette was great for making a cup of coffee after a lot of travelling. We only stayed the one night in London but would definitely stay there again and will recommend it to friends. The shower was great, with plenty of hot water and ample room. The bathroom is not very big but fine for one person at a time and it is very modern and clean. As the room was air conditioned, we were able to set the temperature we preferred and it worked! The bed was the most comfortable one we had slept on in our whole 5 weeks of travelling in Europe. It is a very safe upmarket area, so we walked around in the evening. Close to restaurants and supermarkets as well as the tube stations. We easily walked carrying our backpacks to Paddington station to catch the train to Heathrow for our flight. I was able to borrow an adaptor from reception for my electronic devices as I only had a European adaptor with me.

We had a room in the basement which faced the inside "light well". We had to keep the window and blind closed so other people couldn't see in. But this wasn't really an issue for us as we used the air conditioning and were only there the one night.
