“Friendly and a little bit different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2011

We loved our stay at the Church Street Hotel! The room was small, but adequate, and the breakfast and interesting location made up for that in a big way! The fresh bread, homemade jams and made to order coffee was much appreciated. The front desk staff were especially helpful when it came to finding bargains around London, and some good Indian restaurants!

On our first trip to London my husband and I decided to pick this hotel because it looked different to the typical hotels in London. I would best describe this hotel as a super sized B&B with the charm and coziness you don't often find in the larger chain of hotels. If you are the type of person who can't deal with a few creaking sounds or colorful decor then this is prehaps not for you. But overall this gorgeous hotel has wonderful and friendly staff, a fantastic breakfast and most importantly reverse cycle a/c which came in handy when the room warmed up considerably due to a British version of a heat wave.
If you decided to stay at this hotel which is perfect for people who don't want to be in the centre of busy London, It is a 10minute bus ride to the nearest tube.
The entrance can be a little bit difficult to distinguish but appart from that I found this to be a great hotel and a breath of fresh air from the typical Chain hotels.

Although the website did state that it was a shared bathroom, for some reason I assumed at £90 a night that that meant the twin room had one ensuite... Still feels odd that a £90 room in Camberwell would be a tiny room, with a sink, and a shower room/ toilet in a shared corridor... Stayed here with my son to allow us to walk to Brixton Academy - 25 minute walk.

Breakfast was very nice, reception very pleasant. No signage to rooms, so with the choices on offer to get up the winding staircases, not easy to find your way back to the room on first attempt.

Plenty of noise from Camberwell high street - sirens, shouting, etc., which isn't the hotel's fault, but do be aware it is right on the street, so not a quiet night.

Room Tip: Don't know if there is an en-suite room available. We weren't 'high street side' bu...

I picked this hotel as the reviews were good and it was convenient for me as I was doing a work related course nearby,
The decoration all over the hotel is done with great taste, beautiful tiling, comfortable beds. Staff were all very pleasant and personable. A very stylish hotel with quirky design.
Fabulous croissants at breakfast. my only negative is that rooms at the front are over street level and can be noisy, we changed to a quiet room at the back and it was perfect. I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: assk for a room at the back

I often have to spend a night or two in London on business and whenever possible this is my choice of hotel. I grew up in South London, so don't mind catching buses or venturing out to Camberwell. If you do mind that, then this place isn't for you; but if you're intrepid, you'll be hard pressed to find such a delightful hotel in this price range.

It describes itself as a Spanish American oasis, and that's exactly what it is. It has bags of character; is immensely comfortable; spares no imagination when it comes to decor or comfort. Even in the single rooms the beds are a good size, and the shower rooms off them may be tiny but smell deliciously of L'Occitane toiletries. Although on a main road, the windows are soundproof and the hotel itself is very quiet. I'm a poor sleeper but rarely have a bad night's sleep here.

Staff are polite and interesting - as are the clientele! Perhaps because it's a small hotel I feel more inclined to say good morning to fellow guests than in other hotels. Although I've never had a proper conversation with any of them, the atmosphere here is very much warm rather than cool, and that extends to the guests too.

Breakfast is great - boiled eggs, organic cereals, Neal's Yard yoghurts, good coffee, pastries, good bread, homemade smoothies.

There's a terrific tapas restaurant downstairs (though I've come a cropper when I've not booked in advance).

My favourite thing? There's always a selection of good books by my bed placed as if by a good friend who knows exactly what I'd like to read - recently, the poems of Pablo Neruda, John Wilmot and Milton and a triplet of plays by Stephen Adly Guirgis. How classy is that?

The smart grey facade gives no hint of the Spanish colonial atmosphere and brightly painted rooms in this hidden gem in the south London oasis of Camberwell. The honesty bar with excellent beers, rums and tequilas has a gentleman's club feel, albeit one in Buenos Aires, and the reception staff are always friendly and helpful.

Really enjoyed my stay here. Staff were very welcoming, had a lovely room, with some nice touches: like selection of DVD to watch. There is a bus stop nearby with a good service into central london. Very much looking forward to going back soon.
