“Treat for the Wife (yes I said the wife, not partner)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Spur of the moment last minute decision to treat the wife. Found a great offer for the Apex on Secret Escapes, went to the hotel web site to check it out and found an even better deal direct with the hotel.
The Good:
It's in a great location, just a few minutes walk from Fenchurch street and Tower Hill stations. Our welcome was friendly, efficient and helpful and they even gave us a £10 voucher to spend in the hotel bar or restaurant. The room was spotless and well equipped, the towels were big and fluffy, the telly was huge as was the bed and the view from the top floor outside balcony was lovely too.
We had an evening meal included in the price, we booked our dinner time and arrived promptly, The service again was excellent, the food from the set menu was well presented, lovely and just enough.
The Breakfast (In with the price) was also excellent with a large choice of cooked options and plenty to choose from for the continental option and once again the service was prompt, friendly and efficient.
Check out isn't until 12.00 so there is no rush to stuff your breakfast, pack and leave, there's even time to go back to your room for a chill out to let breakfast settle before you leave, The receptionist was very helpful at check out and they even looked after our luggage until later that evening so we didn't have to drag it round with us all day.
The Bad!
The bed! It was worn and had a bowl shaped mattress, I woke up after only a couple of hours sleep with a painful back and then couldn't go back to sleep for about 3 hours leaving me totally worn out for the next days sight seeing. The wife slept peacefully all night without any problem though.
The Ugly:
They did add a "Discretionary" 12.5% tip to the bill which I think is rather cheeky and rather high, it used to be a 10% tip most places in Europe and by adding it to the bill doesn't make it very discretionary. It would seem this has now become "The Norm" in London though. Would be nice to think the hotel paid their staff enough to earn a living without relying on a forced "Discretionary" tip to top up their wages, or perhaps it's just greed? We didn't pay anything as everything was all in the original price paid but just thought that it was a bit cheeky so worth a mention for any "Old fashioned Brits who care to visit.
To sum up:
Great hotel, great price and value, extremely great staff (None of whom were apparently English), lovely rooms, lovely food. Don't go if you suffer with back problems.

Having stayed ni the Apex City of London Hotel a number of times, it has become my first choice in the area. The hotel has atmosphere (also because it is not too big), the rooms are spacious and well kept, the service is friendly and genuine. Due to the constant influx of business travellers rates can be quite high sometimes, all the more since e.g. breakfast is not included :-(

My recent stay in this hotel was a good experience. Never heard before of Apex and since it was bookable through a conference, I decided to choose it.
Service and quality were very good. They increased the room price during this period (as many hotels do), but price you paid for the room I got was below expectation. Bed and infrastructure at the other side were really ok. And I love walk in showers.
But when you are most of the time out and working this does not bother. But if I would have to work on the desk for a longer while the limited room size would be a little problem.
Food in the restaurant and selections were great. That helps a lot when coming back and not wanting to stroll in in neighborhood food hunting.
Would choose this hotel again, when the prices are back to normal (and also available correctly in the online reservation system).

I and a colleague have stayed in this Hotel before and as usual Apex London lived up to all our expectations. As we arrived early in London it was no trouble at all for Apex to store our suitcases
and even pre-booked our rooms for us. When we arrived back later from meetings our rooms were ready and waiting. Service and food was excellent - nothing was too much trouble ! The hotel itself was smart and the rooms excellent. Although not the cheapest hotel in Tower Hill, I believe in paying for quality and Apex certainly lives up to that !

The Hotel is perfect for business also leisure trips. We stayed for 3 nights, one weekend in January 2013 and we couldn't find any issues to complain. The reception staff was unbelievable cute, smiling all the time and always at our disposal. Great customer service! The bar staff very friendly and funny ;) The room was big, so clean and comfortable. Also we booked for a standard room but since we asked for a balcony we received a free upgrade and got this big room on the top floor, I think, with a large terrace overlooking to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Location absolutely convenient, nearby Tower Hill station from where you can go anywhere in the city. If we'll go again in London, for sure, we will choose the same hotel. Thank you to the management and staff! Georgiana&Viorel (we had the most romantic weekend in London!!!)

I have just returned from a weekend stay in the Apex City of London hotel. From the moment I arrived the staff were extremely helpful and the check in process was very quick. The receptionist also offered advice on the best travel routes to take so as to avoid closed lines due to on-going tube maintenance. This was a great help. My room was an excellent size especially compared to some hotels I have stayed in London where the rooms are tiny. There is everything you could need in the room and a great selection of TV channels. The facilities in the hotel are also excellent there is a very cool bar as well as another chill out/reading area and a great gym in the basement which has top of the range equipment. The location of the hotel is perfect Tower Hill tube station is literally a 2 minute walk away and Tower Gateway (to catch the DLR) is another 2 minutes stroll. After this trip the Apex City of London hotel is now my go to hotel for all trips to London.

Having booked the hotel and traveled down to London on the same day, we didn't have a lot of time to shop around for the best hotel, however, we booked through Secret Escapes so got a fairly good deal for the one night we stayed (£95).

We didn't arrive till about 7.30pm but the door man was friendly as were the staff on reception, and check in went very smoothly. Having never been to London before, the staff were happy to offer us directions and when we were departing, even offered to call us a taxi.
The hotel itself is extremely well maintained, and very modern, however one issue we had with the hotel, is that it was very dark, due to the dim lighting.

When we arrived in out room (650) we were extremely pleased with it; the room was large, clean and very modern, as was the beautiful bathroom. As with downstairs however, the lighting was very poor. Although there were a number of lights in the room, they were all very dim, which made putting makeup on in the mornings very difficult. The room had a massive king sized bed beautifully made up which looked very inviting, it was however very hard and we did not have a good nights’ sleep. Another point which we felt could be improved was the milk offered in the room. Although there was a well-stocked welcome tray with bottled water, tea, coffee, biscuits etc. there was the usual cheap uht milk. The hotel room had its own fridge and it would have been great if there had been just a small amount of fresh milk on offer. The room did have everything you could possibly need, from an iron, to shoe polish, which was great.

The hotel was in a superb location, only a couple of minutes from the tube station (Tower Hill) and the Tower of London/Tower Bridge. Check out was at 12 pm which was great, however as we needed to be out early, the reception staff allowed us to leave our suitcase at the hotel until we returned later in the day.

Overall we were very happy with the quality of the hotel, but the bed needs to be softer because the sleep quality at a hotel is one of the most important factors for us.

Dear KatyReynolds

Thank you for your detailed and positive review on our hotel. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. I am however sorry that you did not feel that the quality of the mattress was to an acceptable standard. We do have a detailed rolling programme to replace mattresses and take a lot of care in the selection of the mattresses as he quality of our guests sleep is of utmost importance. While this mattress had been replaced on schedule, we have decided to replace it again.

I appreciate your comments and hope we can welcome you back again in the near future.

Kind regards

Robert Flinter
