“Warm and Lovely”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2013

My husband and I took a trip to England for our 20th wedding anniversary the week of November 29th to December 7th. We normally spend our anniversary in a warm and tropical local as we enjoy scuba diving and the beach…however, we wanted to branch out and do something out of the norm. The UK has always been somewhere we’d plan to go, and being a milestone year, we decided to go to London. After researching the area and deciding upon a suitable itinerary, we narrowed our hotel of choice down to the Taj. The hotel’s proximity to many of the tourist sites (Westminster Abby, Big Ben, London Eye, and Buckingham Palace) and with the convenience to the underground system from St. James Station, it was the perfect choice.

From the moment we checked in to the Taj we were greeted by warm and friendly staff. Sergio was excellent in showing us to our room, giving us an overview of the hotel and its amenities, and providing us with local knowledge on restaurants, transportation, and site seeing. He gave us a map of the area, which was far superior to what we were planning to use, and highlighted the proper routes to take for the underground system. Being American, my husband and I were unsure about the proper etiquette for tipping in the England. Sergio was kind enough to answer our questions and put us at ease. After leaving us to get settled in our room, he returned a short time later to provide us with a welcome basket of fruits, breads, cheeses, etc. and a welcome card! We really appreciated that!

Our room at the Taj was a Junior King Suite. It was very comfortable, clean, and suited us perfectly. Although there was not a lot of closet space, we managed to make it work just fine. The bathroom had a wonderful deep tub that was perfect for warming up after a long day of site seeing and walking. The shower was just as nice (That is after I figured out the knob situation! Beware, when you turn the knob to the left you may get sprayed in the face by the hand piece that hangs next to the shower head! Quite a sobering moment first thing in the morning!). The kitchen was nice and stocked with coffee, teas, water, dishes and silver wear. We didn’t cook anything but used the kettle, coffee maker, and the refrigerator. We particularly liked having a clothes washer and dryer in the kitchen which we used during our stay a few times. Overall, the room was warm and comfortable and was a wonderful reprieve at the end of a long day walking and touring London.

The concierge staff at the Taj was excellent. Kalman, Nelson, Jon, and Alex were very professional, kind, and helpful in assisting us during our stay. On December 4th, our anniversary, we decided to take the two and a half hour trip to Paris, France on the Eurostar high speed train across the English Channel. We waited until the last minute to do this (We weren’t sure it would be worth it for the day and there was still so much to do in London, but in the end felt we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go.). The concierge staff were able to assist us getting the earliest reservation which allowed us to leave the following morning and return that night back to London. They arranged our transportation to St. Pancras Station (we could have taken the underground there but we were leaving so early we had to take a taxi) and gave us all the information we needed to get to Paris and back. We returned back to London that night, late…and although it was a very long day it was very much worth it. The concierge staff at the Taj were so helpful to us. We truly appreciated them! And, we had a wonderful surprise when we got back to our room that night, a lovely dessert plate with a “Happy Wedding Anniversary” greeting!

On our last night at the Taj we decided to eat at Quilon. A reservation was made for us by Santanu. It was magnificent! My husband and I can say it was one of the best meals we have had! Ironically, I am usually not a fan of Indian food, however, this was an outstanding meal and the restaurant was beautiful. We were truly impressed.

We checked out of the Taj on the 7th. The staff was again very helpful and efficient in getting our final bill and arranging our transportation to Heathrow. We were truly impressed with the Taj and look forward to coming back again someday!

Room Tip: The Junior King Suite is perfect for the couple just wanting a comfortable place to relax at the end...

Really did not know what to expect as booked last minute, but the rooms were great and the service was outstanding. Really a home from home. Simply the best hotel I have stayed in Central London. Will come back the kids next time.

Thank you for a lovely stay. We arrived and were immediately made to feel special by the staff. Got a free upgrade which made it even better. Rooms are quite spacious with lovely molton brown products and complimentary nespresso capsules for the machine. If you order a DVD you get popcorn and soft drinks. Complimentary cocktails and canapés every evening made this very special. Breakfast was amazing. Overall a lovely weekend away.

A real treat - and a classic case of really getting what you pay for - and worth every penny.
The suites at this hotel provide a home away from home in a great location, a short distance from Victoria, Westminster and the West End. Set back from the street off, not-too-busy Buckingham Gate, it was quiet at night but within easy access of all London's food and fun, whatever time of day.
Every single member of staff provided genuine, friendly, helpful service. They accommodated us when we had an extra guest for breakfast, offered us tea when we had a short wait before checking in and always had a smile and pleasant greeting whenever we passed. Daily breakfast in the library provided a more-than-substantial start to the day with a huge variety of choice in comfortable surroundings. When we had a drink there one evening before going out for dinner it was great to enjoy the warm fire and endless supply of daily newspapers.
The staff here, along with the comfort of the hotel, helped us create a weekend that we will remember forever. Just what we wanted. We feel very lucky to have picked 51 Buckingham Gate.
My only criticism is of the Spa. We felt like this wasn't on a par with the rest of the hotel - We had 30 minute Spa treatments - they didn't feel like anything particularly special and even felt a bit hasty. It may have been partly the nature of a 30-minute treatment, but we have both experienced similar spa treatments at other leading hotels around the world and while this was nice, it just wasn't anything special whereas even a cup of tea at the hotel was made to feel like a special occassion.

We just returned from a 35 day stay in England. One on the very best experiences was our stay @ the Taj. Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful staff. We expected great food, a spotless environment and a knowledgeable staff. We got all that and far more. As we waited for a booked car to take us to our ship it became apparent it was going to be a no show. As it was a 2 hour trip we were very concerned. The staff called Cunard with no response. They suggested we take a taxi to Southhampton and immediately got an extra large one for us. What a relief.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the second floor or above.

Just returned from a four-night stay at 51 Buckingham and I cannot say enough about this property. First of all, the staff is just delightful. We have not experienced service like this in years -- attentive, professional, knowledgeable and taking such pride in their jobs. They were fabulous. The concierges made everything seamless. We purchased tickets to Matilda, The Eye and The Bus Tour and the pricing was the same as buying tickets directly. Traveling with our three young children, we were concerned about space. There was absolutely no need for worry. The elegant three-bedroom suite easily accommodated our family with spacious bedrooms, sleek bathrooms, a full kitchen and elegant dining room. We ate breakfast every morning and enjoyed their "happy hour" each evening. The location is ideal. We walked to Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. Sadly, we headed to Paris after our stay there and, as expected, the rooms were tiny and the staff, not quite so warm. When we were getting on our plane to head back the U.S., my son said, "Can we go back to London and see our friends at the hotel?" We will be back. Thank you to the hotel and its staff at 51 Buckingham for making our children's first visit to London simply perfect.

Room Tip: The Ministers Suite is lovely and recently remodeled.
