“Good value and located well”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2012

I had a seven day stay, during the Olympics. The price was very reasonable, the accommodation was more than adequate for a single , middle-aged, "Yank" who generally travels rough , location was perfect (my longest trip to a venue from there was about forty minutes), staff were generally kind and helpful. Since these are university rooms, my expectations were not that high, but I must say that my expectations were exceeded. If you keep in mind that these are essentially university dorm rooms, I recommend this as a very cost-effective place to stay in London.

My niece and I stayed here for seven nights in July/August 2012. It was a very good experience. The people at the reception desk went out of their way to help us with anything we needed. They allowed us to store our bags in a locked room until check-in time. We loved the location and felt we were part of the neighborhood after a couple of days. It's very close to a bakery, inexpensive for breakfast, and several good restaurants and pubs. The Lambeth North tube station is nearby and we could see the London Eye from the kitchen window! The kitchen was clean, and we were able to store a few items in the refrigerator for snacking at night, and there were plenty of coffee cups and a hot pot, so I made coffee every morning. We shared a shower and toilet with three other rooms, but never had to wait to use either. The reception desk will provide electric converters and hairdryers if you need them. They only provide one towel for the week, so bring your own. I took a hand towel and washcloths and an extra towel for drying my hair. Bring your own Kleenex tissues, too. Bed linens are provided and they were clean. Someone empties your trash bin every day, but that's all they do during your stay. You must make your own beds! Since it was summer and there was no air conditioning, we left our windows open the entire time and were never bothered with insects or noise. If you want to spend your time and money seeing London, stay here and you will have much more to spend on the fun and still have a nice place to sleep every night. I highly recommend the place and will definitely return on my next trip to London.

My wife and I stayed at this place in London for three nights in early June, 2012. It was a fairly central and relatively inexpensive place to stay, and with some hesitations we can recommend it. In case you did not know, this is a student dorm that is rented out to tourists during the summer break. See our list of pros and cons below if you want more information:

Pros:
- The room we had, on the 7th floor, had a nice view of London, including Parliament, the London Eye and Westminster Abbey.
- There is a well equipped kitchen on each floor, with a refrigerator, cooking areas and other items for use by anyone on the floor.
- The staff at the reception desk were generally friendly and helpful.
- Given London's expensive prices, the cost is fairly reasonable.
- The location is about a 1 mile walk from Parliament and other nearby sites. Right across the street from the Imperial War Museum, which is a great museum telling the story of recent wars without overly glorifying them.

Cons:
- Our particular room smelled just a bit, perhaps from students who smoked or were not good housekeepers during the semester.
- There is no bathroom in the room, and only two for each floor. Not a big deal for some people, but the lights in the hall were bright, making any late night trips to the WC too eye opening!
- There is a sink in the rooms, but the water is labelled as not safe to drink, requiring a trip to the floor's kitchen if you need drinking water.
- The area was fine during the day, but seemed just a bit run down to be walking in at night. Might actually have been safer than we thought and we never had any problems.

We stayed here for 7 nights in August 2011. This was one of the cheapest places we could find in London that was still reasonably well-located. The price is definitely good for the location - it's only a 5 minute walk to Lambeth North station on the underground, and about 15 minutes to the London Eye. The rooms were fairly small, but liveable. The carpet was quite stained. The beds were clean and reasonably comfortable, and there was a lot of storage space. You do not have your own toilet or shower, but our room did have a sink, which many hostels do not. The reception desk is open 24 hours, which is a big plus if you want to check in late. Make sure you bring a cell phone though, as the security staff will often leave the desk, and you will have to call them if you need something.

The man who checked us in was very friendly and helpful, but every other member of the staff I spoke to was rather short and sometimes downright rude. Also, there is internet in the rooms, but it failed for us for an entire evening, which could be disastrous for somebody visiting on business. Reception did not know how to do anything about it when we called, but it was fixed midway through the next morning.

The lift was broken when we got there, which wouldn't have been a big problem except that we were put on the 9th floor of the building, and had to carry our 20kg suitcases up all of these stairs. We were told when checking in on Monday that it had broken last week and would be fixed within 2 or 3 days, but it was still not fixed when we left the following Monday. It was quite annoying to have to walk up all these stairs if you forgot something in your room or something like that. Hopefully this won't be a problem for future visitors, but the place in general does seem to be in fairly bad repair.

From our room on the ninth floor we could hear a persistent buzzing noise for the entire week, similar to a vibrating cell phone. It would go for about 5 seconds, stay silent for 15 seconds, and then buzz again. I'm not sure if it's related to the floor we were on, or if it was coming from the broken lift, or what, but it was quite annoying and interfered with our ability to sleep properly.

The shared toilets were alright, but there is no soap provided, so be sure to bring your own. Towels are provided.

We didn't use the shared kitchen much, but it seemed decently equipped.

Overall, it was about what we expected for the price. Though I think next time we might spend a little more.

We stayed here for one night, we were looking for somewhere cheap. The location is good, rooms very outdated and basic, shared bathrooms. The shower head had come off the wall so I have to hold it up whilst showering. It was quite clean. Overall just really basic facilities. Got a room at a travelodge the next night at half the price of this.

Apart from the location and price this place has little going for it. Didn't feel safe at International House. Rooms were dirty and uncomfortable, plastic mattresses were sagging, hard and too short even for me at 5'5. Plus the 2nd bed in the twin room didn't fit - it was either under the desk or blocking the door. The sink in the toilet didn't work and we didn't appear to have a sink in our room so were teeth cleaning etc in the bath (we were told when complaining after we left that the sink was in the cupboard...obviously). Single glazed windows on a busy road made worse as the window wouldn't shut so zero sleep had. Booked for 2 nights but didn't stay for the second

the rooms were farily clean but the showers and bathrooms were not well maintained. it is located in fair close to the city and the price is very low. there are definitely better alternatives for hostels and dorms in London in the same price range.
