“London hotel with personal touch and great bathroom door”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Handy for DLR line, nearer Deptford Bridge than Greenwich - about 10 mins walk into center of Greenwich. Reasonable parking charges (for London) but book in advance.
Hotel appears recently decorated/refurbished, room and bathroom very clean and tidy.
Bathroom had the most informative door of any hotel I have ever stayed in
Staff very friendly and helpful. Lively bar at night.Recommend.

The room was fresh and modern, I liked the historical trivia on the sliding door in the room. The tray charge for room service is reasonable.

The location is good for getting to both Canary Wharf and central London. It took me about 8 mins walk to get to Greenwich station.

The ironing boards are less than good, they are small and unstable.

Overall I'd visit again.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I can only agree that our location is well located for central London visitors and Canary Wharf. We have noted your comments regarding the iron board and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Spent two weeks at this hotel. Very convenient location, close to transport, without being on a busy thoroughfare. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, and restaurant service was excellent. Rooms are basic, but comfortable, and good value for money.

I booked into the Mercure through a discounter: it was promoted as a 4* hotel but was far from that level. The hotel is on a quiet side street a short walk from the Depford Bridge DLR, and there are many shops and restaurants in the area. The hotel has very limited on-site parking which must be reserved in advance: the reservation didn't make this clear so I had to take street parking (free until 9 am). The breakfast is also a significantly better deal if purchased in advance, but again was not offered at booking. The staff put a 61 gbp lien on my credit card to cover potential incidentals, which seems unnecessary and takes additional time to confirm.

Check-in was tedious: the desk was understaffed for 8pm, and the computer could not fill guest information onto the check-in forms, so everyone had to fill them in by hand. Since I had booked through a discounter, I was given a room of lesser quality on the 1st floor, there are a number of internal stairs that needed to be navigated. The lifts don't each access every floor, so finding the right way up was difficult.

The room was well appointed, with a nice double bed, flat screen TV, safe, coffee / tea service, and mini-fridge. There was free wireless internet, signal quality was so-so. The bathroom was clean and bright; the shower had moderate pressure and tepid hot water. The room was quiet, butt the windows bolted shut so temperature control was a bit difficult.

Overall while the rooms were nice, the overall experience with the staff and the mediocre condition of the services need some work.

Room Tip: Beware of getting shunted to a 'discout' room

If you can get a good deal on this hotel then I'd definitely recommend it. However, it's nearer Deptford Bridge than Greenwich so this could confuse some people. It's a 3 minute walk from Deptford Bridge DLR station though so is very handy for getting a train. The journey from Kings Cross station took about 40 minutes.

The rooms are very modern and new. From reading other reviews here it seems that there are pretty significant variations in size of rooms available. We were in 307 which was a larger room with a huge walk in shower too. The only downside to the room is that it looks out over the air conditioning fans which can be heard 24/7 - something to be aware of if you're a light sleeper. This is also true of the general location with sirens etc and the double glazing doesn't counteract this very well. Our room was at the back of the hotel - I think those facing the front would definitely have a better view and be quieter.

The bar and restaurant areas are also very funky and made a nice place to relax. The staff are very friendly too which is always a positive and too often lacking in larger chain hotels.

Overall I would stay here again but only if an offer was available - the fact that it isn't in Greenwich means that I think the rack rate is unjustifiably expensive.

If you are staying for more than one night the rooms are very small with little storage for your luggage. We were disappointed that they didn't have a suitcase track which bending down to the floor to get things out. The shower is very small and slick and has no grab handles to step in and out off.
The TV wireless internet connection did not work and the keyboard was nightmare. We tried several times to connect and were charged each time for the privilege!

The front of house staff Nico was great. However the reception was in adequately staffed leaving the front of house staff very stretched.
