I live around the corner and El Toro Locos was a regular favourite. The food was mainly nice, the prices were great (too cheap really) and the service was friendly if flaky at times.
We were sad to see it close, and when re-opened under Elche management we immediately gave it a couple of tries. We were disappointed and didn't like the food as much as the old regime. We decided to try again this eve after some time, and boy have they upped their game. The other two enjoyed everything they had but mine was sublime. We were brought a large plate of fresh raw fish and seafood and the manager explained how it would be cooked - these were the specials. I chose grilled butterflied langoustines and monkfish kebabs. Recklessly I also ordered stuffed courgettes. What he didn't explain was that these are main course sizes., not tapas, so I ended up with miles too much food. So amazing was it, I ate it all and waddled out afterwards.
4 large, sumptuous langoustines with more flesh on them than many a lobster.Exquisite flavour - not messed about with, simply grilled with lemon and a little side salad That almost bitter sweet aniseed flavour has to be one of the most exquisite of all. Monkfish kebabs, with large prawns, cherry tomatoes, salad and rice. Again, simply grilled but to perfection. Beautifully moist and melt-in-the-mouth fish. You do not get food of this quality at flashy London places like The Ivy or Le Caprice.
Service efficient and very friendly. We realised the bill would be steeper than usual, owing to our choosing expensive dishes. I paid £50, but really, I had 2 mains and a tapas as well. And we shared a patatas. 2 bottles of house wine between the 3 of us. Brandy on the house. Normally, you would not spend that much.
We will definitely be returning here. There is really good eating in Wanstead now,. Makes us love our neighbourhood even more. So glad Kirsty and Phil have never discovered it.
