Description: The Pig and Butcher occupies a handsome pub built in the mid 1800's on what was fields used by farmers to rest and feed their livestock before being sent to Smithfield's Meat Market. We have brought the pub back to it's roots and receive carcasses straight from the farm and butcher them on site. We specialise in rare breeds such as White Park cattle, Iron Age pigs and Hebridean lamb while our friend Seb at Chart Farm supplies our game - if you haven't tried his venison you haven't lived! In summer we grill over coal and wood on our specially built Robata grill. In winter we brine, cure, smoke and braise.Vegetables come from Kent and are as good and as fresh as anything you'll find in this country. Our fish is supplied by Rupert on the south coast. He calls us in the morning and tells us what the day boats have caught and what he has. This is one of the reasons our menu changes so much - we literally don't know what fish we'll be serving until we have spoken with Rupert! We take our inspiration from farmhouse tables across Europe. Food is served simply and with little fuss! Share lots of small plates or a single big plate. We like the idea of bringing conversation back to the dining table and what better way to do it than sharing/stealing food? Think of food as Granny used to make…

“Great gastropub with excellent and original cooking and drinking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Islington is a better place following the renovation of this old pub on the corner of the Liverpool Road and Theberton Street late last summer. The make-over has created an exciting destination pub, but you need to book to eat here! The menu changes daily and everything is coooked to order. Great emphasis on ingredients and their sourcing, but the recipies are original and delicious. Last night I had a delicious wing of skate sitting on roasted cauliflour, and my husband had delicious venison. I have also had delicate sole with green basil sauce. The staff are professional and enthusiastic. The decor is spanking new - nice touches like large linen napkins. But the noise level is high and its always bustling. The drinks are original - never seen so many interesting bottled beers from all over the place....Not cheap but good evening out. We'll be back.

“Great to another great food and drink pub in Islington”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

My regular is and always be the Albion, however, The Pig and Butcher is a fab pub. The staff are great, the food is excellent and the wine list is near perfect. Tasty Sunday lunch, super for lunch, good lively atmosphere for dinner. Two parts to it, the bar for drinks and food, where you take pot luck or the resturant that you need to book. Highly recommend this pub on the site of the old Islington tup. Staff are great, good place to chill with friends, though take a warm top can chilly in the evening due to drafty doors.

“Sublime food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

I was lucky enough to be taken for a surprise dinner at the Pig and Butcher last night after I had been banging on about going for the last few months.

Adnams Explorer and Malbec were superb accompaniments to the food we had.
Incredible lamb scotch eggs and sausage rolls available at the bar (or alongside your meal). Beautifully flavoured and tasty.

All of the dishes we sampled were excellent and well executed. 10/10.

The only thing that could make this place better is if it was located at the end of my street!!
