“What a cool hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

I really enjoyed staying in the Dictionary! It is a really cool little hostel although much bigger than it seems from the outside. I particularly enjoyed the hostel bar which was really nice and convenient. The location is also great if you want to go out in Shoreditch or explore the Shoreditch area (whilst also still being a very short walk from the tube station to get into more central areas of London). The rooms are small but nice. Ours was a 4-bed dorm with en-suite shower and toilet which was great, and the storage under the beds is a good feature as well. There is a club next door which we went to and enjoyed, although, if you are looking to go to bed early then you should be aware that the hostel is quite noisy until late with the bar downstairs and the club next door. This wasn't an issue for us though. Breakfast in the morning was simple but effective.

Just back from staying here after a trip to London last week. First of all the hostel is quite hard to find, it is on the main street but we walked past it twice without realising it was the hostel! The staff are ok, seemed busy talking to their friends half the time. The thing I most disliked about the hostel was the hidden extra charges. After being in Edinburgh before Christmas and spending £19 a night on a hostel that was better, I felt a bit robbed after being in the Dictionary. The fact you have to pay £5 each per towel in the hostel is a joke. Especially after paying £70 a night for the room. The room was nice, but when we arrived the window was wide open and the room was freezing and the heater was off. The shower kept blocking. Another thing that I found really odd was that it was obvious that someone had been in our room, possibly to clean...however all they did was re arrange our toiletries on the sink? There was pee on the toilet when we arrived and my socks were filthy from walking on the floor. The bed was really comfy but the sheets had stains. I was happy there was a tv in the room, but it seemed odd that the hostel gave you a tv but not towels. The last issue I had with the hostel is the fact you have to walk through what seemed like scaffolding in order to get to our room. The area is amazing, Shoreditch is full of great bars and restaurants. I would stay in Shoreditch again but The Dictionary is extremely over priced for what you get.

Good location in Shoreditch and great bar downstairs. We thought we had booked an ensuite room but hadn't that must be our fault not theirs. The room we had was spacious and comfy. The only problem was that as it had just been painted and finished that day the room smelt of fumes so had to have the window open. The shower was clean however I could not get it any cooler than boiling hot and the motion sensor timed out after 20 seconds so was in complete darkness waving my arms around to activate it with soap in my eyes, however as this floor had only opened that day things like this were to be expected. Would stay there again.

Booked a 6 bed to begin with, as we were travelling as group we asked them to change this a couple times which was not a problem! When we got there first impressions were fab! Such a quirky wee place! The staff were so friendly and helpful on how to get around London. Got back later on that day and check-in was slightly complicated, not bore you with details but something to do with an email that was sent to say more money was owed- which was never received. If this hadn't of happpened I would of give the place 5 stars! Other than that.. great wee spot! Brilliant wee bar downstairs, very lively at night! Awesome location, such a trendy area! And really helpful, chilled staff! PS Sorry for the mess in our room Dictionary!

Room Tip: Don't lose your key! You won't get your £5 deposit back! Woops.

Firstly The staff in this place are great. Especially the guys behind the bar, really made us feel at home and gave us some great tips on where to go .We just left this morning and didn't want to leave.
Rooms are clean and really unless you want to pay £200 a night for a crappy hotel. The hostel is very cheap and in an amazing location to shoreditch , dalston, brick lane and the west end.

Top class hostel and bar

I stayed in a 6 bed room with ensuite earlier this month. The hostel is in a great location and the staff are very friendly, but it is a little disorganised - eg I didn't get a key during my stay and had to rely on the door being unlocked or a staff member letting me in.

I also found the room quite cramped - the lockers were on the small side so everyone had their bags and suitcases on the floor, which left virtually no space to move. It was also very hot and stuffy in the room which made it difficult to sleep.

The breakfast was one of the better hostel breakfasts though - a delicious bagel.

People need to stop moaning about this hostel, for the price you pay what do people expect? Its cheap and chearful in a great location right on shoreditch high street with plenty of bars nearby. Brick Lane is a short walk away as is a 'Boris Bike' station so you can travel all over London for £1 a day! Theres plenty of more expensve gaffs if you want all mod cons etc. This is perfect for backpackers or single sex groups.

Its still under development and theres a few teething issues but nothing to stress about. The staff are really friendly and helpful, the rooms are spotless, the bar downstairs is reasonably priced and serves a free brew and a bagel to guests in the morning.
