Ajani Grill and Jazz is nestled next to a gaudy, fluorescent, brand new Tesco, on a crappy part of Hornsey Road. It's a nondescript, somewhat dusty looking little place from the outside with a big heavy red door. If you manage to force that door open you're greeted with an old piano, wall-to-wall jazz memorabilia and the ever smiley, lovely owner/chef/host Patrick. Patrick sources locally, hand-makes everything, cooks and usually serves the food, himself. Everything on the menu looks amazing and everybody I've taken there has tried something that's impressed them. But for me, it's all about the ribs. And the Chicken. Patrick does an incredibly, guilt-inductively cheap set special of Wings and Ribs, and I am an addict. Huge, juicy, chicken wings. Tender, sticky, meaty ribs, amazing chips, home made coleslaw and home-made BBQ and peri peri sauces. Service can be slow when Patrick is doing everything himself, but this is is a tiny price to pay!
Patrick knows his food and his music, and there are regular live performances for a small cover charge. It's brill. Just go there!
