I stayed here for one night on business. I needed to be in walking distance of Victoria Station for an early morning train. The hotel's location is excellent for easy transport links, but of course you can hear the trains. This did not stop me from sleeping and on the whole the hotel did the job. The hotel reception staff were very friendly and efficient. The room was clean and in pretty reasonable order. I didn;t eat breakfast (£6) as I was on a room only basis and there are lots of cafes around the station.
The hotel itself has been recently refurbished, but this is not really in keeping with the original building. The modern fittings seem to be at odds with the period nature of the building. The refurbishment isn't really sympathetic and already seems dated because it is so clunky.
There were one or two things which bothered me. The first room I was given was on the side of the building on the ground floor. It had two double beds squeezed into it. As a single female traveler I was bothered by the fact that none of the windows had locks and the room gave straight out on to the pavement. I went back to reception and without any fuss or bother I was quickly given an alternative room on the first floor. On first review this seemed fine, until I went to the large French window which gave out onto a flat roof, an access ladder and was in touching distance of another window. I found the left hand pane had two large fixed bolts securing the window, but the right hand side, which opened, had no lock at all. It didn't make me feel any more secure than being on the ground floor. I'm not sure the rooms had been looked at from the perspective of safety in this way.
Also, because there were two double beds in the room, adjacent to a large chair squeezed under the desk, it was almost impossible to (a) walk between one of the beds and chair to get to the bathroom and the wardrobe without banging against something or (b) actually pull the chair out to sit at the desk to work without having to climb over the arms of the chair to sit on it (and I'm not very big). Again, it didn't seem well thought out.
So, the staff were great, but the hotel is Ok. I'm not sure it was worth the £120 room only I paid, but that's London hotel prices for you.
