My Fiancée and I chose this hotel as I was giving my St.John Smith Square recital debut that evening.(A marvellous concert venue for Classical music which is a three minute walk away).
We wanted somewhere that was close ,had a very decent bar/lounge and easy access to public transport for getting home the next day).
The staff was very friendly and accommodating without being overtly so. Checking in and out was very straight forward and simple.
The room itself was nothing special to be honest but we were pleased that it was very clean and the bed/bedding excellent. There was no mini bar in spite of a small fridge (which was fine for us as we had brought along our own celebratory wines to enjoy after my concert). There was some complimentary water there but we asked for more anyway....This was brought to us in minutes-very speedy,as was an extra duvet!
The bathroom was compact yet clean. (The water pressure from the shower was fabulous).
There were building works going on outside across the road but we were never disturbed at all by the possibility of noise...(We didn't notice any at all in fact!).So we enjoyed a very good night sleep when we finally turned in at 3.00am .
Earlier in the evening when my performance was over ,I invited about 25 guests back to the hotel bar/lounge on the first floor where we remained until around midnight .The atmosphere was very relaxed. Since we had brought our own 'special' bottles of wine ,we thought we'd ask if we could bring these down to share (to the lounge) instead of inviting everyone up to our room (which would have been nigh on impossible as it was after all rather modest in size and comfortable for perhaps only a group of 7-8 people) .
The head waiter/manager was very understanding but said they would have to charge us corkage of £13 per bottle (which we were happy to pay as we had 3 very very good bottles ). Some of the other guests had already purchased cocktails from the bar which were reasonably priced,so we were all quite content.
We had booked this hotel via the 'Hotel.com' website about six weeks earlier at a 'reasonable' rate of £162 for the night. However when we re-checked the pricing (nearer the actual date we were staying) it had escalated to over £300 !! It is certainly 'wise' to book ahead if one can.....
We don't think its worth the higher price but at the discount price it seemed the best we could find in this area .
The next time I play at St.John's we will definitely try to stay here again if the price is similarly reduced.
