“Inconsistent”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

I've had coffee here a few times hoping that it gets better, but it hasn't. Even if they use Monmouth Coffee and have an excellent machine from Italy, the staff lack a clear understanding of how to make coffee that isn't bitter and too hot. The staff obviously needs some further training from Monmouth on how to properly select grind, clean the machine, etc. so that the bitter taste of the espresso is left out and the great aspects can come through. The milk is poor quality, heated to extremes and not properly frothed. The staff always seem in a hurry, even if the shop isn't busy. They should slow down a bit and take their time to make a proper coffee instead of racing through customers.

On top of this, the pastries look days old, dried up, and the atmosphere in the basement is dark and serious. No thanks. I now just go down the street to Monmouth and hope the line isn't too long or head to Pret or Eat, both of which have organic milk.

“In Love”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2012

I love real coffee houses and for me this was placed pretty high on my top list. The staff were super friendly and good at their jobs. The barista took time to ask me EXACTLY how I wanted my coffee. My boyfriend had a macchiato (espresso and steamed milk) and I had a marrachino (macchiato with chocolate). The ground floor is a chocolate store and a spiral staircase leads downstairs to a cafe. Very industrial so yes, it's a noisy place but the vibe is cool and the atmosphere inspirational for creative types. You can watch them making the chocolate.
Next time we're in London I can't wait to go back here and actually spend an hour or two chilling. I think it's great if you're alone or nice for a laid back coffee date.
Btw I'm pretty sure they do have an elevator.

“Needs real cups”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

The coffee shop is situated in the basement of the Hotel Chocolat shop. It serves decent coffee but cups are paper, which I hate. There is a selection of (mainly chocolate) cakes to choose from, which are rather overpriced given their size. They also serve liquid chocolate drink, which can be seen churning temptingly behind the counter. The coffee shop is quite noisy as it is in a basement and decor is rather `industrial' so it wasn't a particularly relaxing experience. There is a narrow spiral staircase to access the room and this would not be suitable for anyone with mobility restrictions.

“Good coffee and excellent cakes for chocolate lovers.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Searching for a quiet place to have a decent coffee before attending a show at the theatre nearby, we were pleased to find this coffee bar, situated in the basement of the shop upstairs which sells take away coffee and chocolate in various forms. We abstained from the tempting liquid chocolate drink and went for Americanos which were fine. A raspberry and chocolate madelaine was delicious. It's very plainly decorated and can be noisy.
