We only went to eat at Umami out of convenience - we were staying at the Crowne Plaza (within which this restaurant is located) and didn't want to go far for dinner. Well, you could color me extraordinarily surprised, because here we had one of the best southeast Asian dinners we've ever had, at least outside Asia.
We ordered a couple of starters (absolutely amazing Spring rolls and extremely tasty chicken skewers) and three main dishes for three people - which was slightly too much for us to finish. The coconut prawns were the surprise of the evening though - served in a delicious red curry sauce, we could not get enough of it. The Thai green curry was ok, not bad, but really nothing truly special. Finally the Mee Goreng (not sure of spelling) was also delicious but it was also fiery hot - pretty much the hottest food I've tasted in Europe - usually even if you ask for hot, they tone it down a bit for us weak westerners, however they didn't spare any chilis here!
Our waitress, Evelyn, was very attentive and polite. I've seen some reviews earlier here complaining about slow service - that I really cannot agree with - it didn't feel slow at all.
They did suggest we try their tasting menus, which seem worth the price, but considering we ordered less and still ended up having too much food, I would recommend thinking twice about it. The waitress kindly suggested we order two menus and split three ways, and has we felt hungrier, we might have done it.
All in all, an extremely good meal - and we were pleasantly surprised.
