“Great food everytime!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Okay, I have eaten at this place perhaps 10-15 times now, the latest being a week ago.

Shayona is a vegetarian Indian restaurant situated in the car park of the Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden, north London. There is an attached supermarket selling Indian vegetables, dried spices, rice etc together with a takeaway counter selling Indian sweets and eggless cakes and ice cream.

If you are coming on the weekend I suggest booking early - it is often packed. I think last orders are at 21:30 so it's not one for the nightowls.

The decor is Indian middle class posh - the kind of decor you see in upper middle class restaurants in Delhi. It's all very clean. Absolutely spotless.

The service is quick - you don't deal with the same waiter throughout but there is always someone around to take your order / help.

The food - well it is a treat. A mix of south indian specialities - idlys, dosas etc together with tandoor snacks, chaats and bhel. All very nice. Mains are mainly Gujrati based dishes - all very tasty.

Remember this is a strict vegetarian place - no egg, meat etc... In fact, no garlic or onions - so suitable for Jains as well.

The final bill is always very reasonable. £10-15 / head including (non alcoholic) drinks.

So if you are after cheap and tasty Indian food in a nice clean setting this is the place for you. The food tastes proper desi rather than the usual Bangladeshi fare which haunts British high streets.

“Lovely food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

We went to visit the temple and I remembered the Telegraph review of the restaurant had been excellent. We really enjoyed our food there, especially the masala dosas, and the bill was very reasonable. Lovely service, elegant decor and an ice cream on the way out for the children.

“A triple joy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

For anyone who enjoys Indian food, Shayona is a triple joy. By its entrance is a food supermarket, specialising almost exclusively in Indian foods, and at good prices. Next door is Shayona Sweets - barfi, gulag jamun, kulfi, and many more. And then, of course, the restaurant itself.

The three of us had a terrific meal with a great round of starters, followed by a main course with lots of paneer, Masala dhosa, ladies' fingers, rice, nan and mango lassi.

This is not 'English Indian' cooking - it's the real thing, with strong flavours, lots of chilli, and fabulous flavours and tastes.

We found the staff gentle and attentive, and benefitted from their guidance as we chose what to order. To a western eye, the atmosphere could perhaps be enhanced by dimming the lighting a little. In keeping with the principles of the Temple, in whose grounds it sits, Shayona is entirely vegetarian and does not serve alcohol.

Very good pricing and highly recommended for a real Indian meal. And if it's open when you are there, the famous Temple across the road is well worth a visit.

“Little gem away from the curry supermarkets”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

I recently visited Shayona in Neasden, London, and was very pleasantly surprised at what I discovered. This is a little gem of a restaurant away from the hustle and bustle of north London's supermarket-style Indian restaurants.

When my friend told me it was a Veggie restaurant, I was not overly keen, but I take that back. What makes this place great is (a) the quality of food - freshly prepared and very tasty (b) quality of service - staff are very humble, polite and courteous and (c) - the traditional decor - it looks like something right out of India.

The fod is not cheap but not particularly more expensive as other Indian restaurants, and parking took a few minutes as it is shared with the temple. However, the experience was very good and there is so much to chose from. The portion sizes are pretty generous.

I would definitely recommend a visit - for the quality of food and the different experience you get compared to the standard restaurants in Wembley.

“On of the top 10 veggie places in London!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

I visited Shayona restaurant a few days ago to celebrate our anniversary. My wife has a medical condition whereby she cannot eat any spicy foods. The chef and staff at the restaurant were so accommodating! Not what you normally see in other veggie places!!! The food was exquisite and even the meal they set out for my wife was tasty!! Definitely recommend this place!!!!
