Liz and I were staying at the Plaza Riverbank Hotel just up the road and baulked at paying £18 each for breakfast so we wandered down the road away from Westminster and found this place. On the first morning we sat inside and had a full breakfast including a mug of decent coffee and as much toast as you can shake a stick at for a fiver each!!! The ambience was cosmopolitan and I felt as though we could be in New York or somewhere with the amazing mixture of nationalities and fantastic community atmosphere. There were some really tempting looking pastries as well and I found out later that the same company that own this cafe and the bar/nightclub next door and Picos Bar a bit further along also owns a wholesale bakery company - such diversity!!
On the second day it was really sunny and we sat outside and had eggs on toast and coffee for about the same price. The tables and chairs remind me of those you see when you are in the Med, and sitting out there under some nice shade trees it was just like being away on our hols. Again there was a really eclectic mixture of people and nationalities sitting around having family breakfast or reading the papers - a really nice atmosphere. The waiting staff were all very pleasant and helpful. It felt like something out of a movie!!
So, if you are in the vicinity at breakfast-time, or just fancy getting away from the touristy bit of Westminster, or are over the river at Tate Britain, just make your way down to the Albert Embankment or across either Lambeth or Vauxhall Bridge from Millbank, and you can enjoy the Madeira Cafe like we did!!
