“Not stopping here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013 via mobile

The place is disgusting. The staff are all rude and depressed. Rooms are uncomfortable and dirty and wherever your room is there is noise from the bar all night. Breakfast is horrible and undercooked. Don't stop here!!

We chose this hotel as Russell Square is a good base from which to explore central London. The location was excellent and although I wasn't expecting more than basic accommodation in a large impersonal hotel this was a shock! We felt like we'd arrived at an airport checkin with luggage, people, noise and queues for the hotel check in which in fairness was handled efficiently. A meal was included for the first night and there was a choice of eateries. Having booked for the theatre and not wanting to be late we opted for the buffet behind reception which was fine. Our breakfast was served in the Windsor Room which sounds nice but if you think huge noisey self service canteen you'll get the picture. The food was o.k coffee undrinkable. On the first day a female member of staff was busy keeping areas very clean with a friendly smile on her face. The second day she was on the door and the standard in the breakfast room poor. Tables were not cleared and cleaned fast enough which made for a very unpleasant start to the day.
*******On the upside our room was basic but very clean and quiet. I had requested a quiet room.

Room Tip: The North side is quieter but this is a large hotel with endless long corridors so be sure you read...

Stayed here two weeks ago with my husband and teenage son. Wasn't sure what to expect due to many of the reviews on. Was pleasantly surprised. As some others say, you get what you pay for and our trip was good value for what we paid. Not the best breakfast in the world but we were lucky that the full cooked breakfast had been included in the price of our deal (I wouldn't have paid the £5 you need to pay extra for the cooked breakfast).

Fortunately I requested a quiet room by email before our trip and we certainly got a quiet room (on the 5th floor). Got two of the best nights' sleeps in London I've ever had. The hotel is in a very good location and is within walking distance of many central areas, 10 minutes walk from Kings Cross (it was quicker to walk than take the tube).

Will not be put off by many negative reviews and would return if we were on a budget.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room

My best friend and I stayed here two nights before our Contiki tour and although it is really convenient due to the basement being right down stairs I wouldn't stay here again.

The staff are very rude and could not care about there customers at all.
When we arrived it was 4:30am after a long flight from Australia we had told the hotel we would be arriving this early yes they still had issues with there paper work. Once we got to our room which took us about 30 mins to find due to them not explaining the hotel layout to us, the room was small, the TV did not work properly and the lights in the bathroom didn't work well.

Overall i think the whole hotel needs a refresh staff included. If you get a night here for your Contiki tour then its fine you can survive for a night becuase you have an amazing trip a head but dont use this hotel as your got to hotel in London.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the outside of the building otherwise all you look at is an empty dark courtyard.

Although the Hotel is well situated, it was impossible to sleep through the night. Half the hotel faces an inner court which contains a large restaurant and pub. Tour busses begin loading early in the morning with loud groups. This noise, both late in the evening and early in the morning can be heard in the rooms which are not provided with sound proof windows. Breakfast was a farce which included cheap cereals, cold toast, mixture of stale buns, brown water for coffee. Book elsewhere!

Room Tip: Select a room not facing the courtyard and high up.

I was very satisfied with this hotel. Basic but very clean, staff very helpful, food good. It is very large and caters for all kinds of groups but I was by myself and not bothered a bit by others. I would recommend this hotel to others who want an economical hotel in a very central location in London.
