“Dont listen to bad reviews, perfect for short stay, comfortable, basic, great location! :-)”
I used to live in the UK and now live in Australia, came back for a holiday with my husband and booked all our accomodation from Australia before we arrived in the UK, looked on trip advisor to check hotels before i booked them and this one had mixed reviews, some people had written really bad comments about it and because the price was right and the location seemed perfect i took a chance... i must say it was LOADS better than i was expecting it to be! Because of the mixed reviews i was expecting it to be run down and really shabby, it was a bit tatty on the outside of the building but the entrance lobbys are lovely and it has fantastic facilities, there is a pub attached to the outside which is part of the hotel, a pizza restraunt right inside the entrance, a bar in the hotel lobby, internet and charging stations, a concierge that dont charge to hold bags when you're checking in and if you arrive early you can leave your bags there and go for a wander and come back to check in, there is a shop selling touristy things in lobby also, a restraunt, room service available, the concierge will also hold your bags when you check out but charge a small 50p a bag to do so. The check in staff are really friendly and helpful, the hotel is huge and has a really large breakfast buffet room. Breakfast is included in the price but i must say this is the only thing that let the experience down for us... it was sort of like a cattle market very basic, staff a bit unfriendly and seemed fed up to be there, very loud and noisy and not much choice, very basic tea, coffee, juice and some tinned fruit, and toast already toasted sitting in a basket under a heat lamp to keep warm with a few spreads. There was the option of upgrading to the cooked breakfast but this cost 5.00 pounds. We decided not to as there is a lovely little cafe just next to the hotel on the same side about 2 units up and they are very reasonably priced and have a fantastic range of foods, vegetarian options, fresh homemade soups, cooked breakfasts, salad bar to take away which we found handy for packed lunches when off sight seeing! Cold and hot drinks, really friendly staff. Also there was internet facilities there and another 2 shops up is an internet cafe, where its only 1.00 for 20 minutes and printing is 20p a sheet. Free wifi in hotel lobby but not in rooms... Back to the hotel, if you put breakfast aside as thats not really what you judge a hotel experience on as it is possible to book the rooms without breakfast... hotel room itself basic but had everything you need, clean towels, spacious, double bed is on request as most of the rooms are standard twin, but we stayed here 3 times and all 3 times we requested a double the staff did everything they could to provide it. The bathroom was clean, fresh clean towels, extra bedding if you need it in the wardrobe, soaps and shower caps etc provided, no shampoo or conditioner however, so need to bring your own, 2 out of 3 of the rooms we stayed in had a hairdryer (this may be on request also, if you want a room with one in you may have to ask) views were fine, we had the BT tower out the window the first night which was cool all lit up at night, the 2nd 2 times we had a view of the little garden courtyard in the centre of hotel. Heating in the room was great, very warm, big radiator under the window, flat screen tv on the desk, kettle, tea and coffee, milk etc provided, plenty of space to put things, desk, chair, bench, wardrobe... lamps etc. It was PERFECT for an over night stay to go out in London or do some sight seeing. Its a wonderful location, its a 2 minute walk from Russell Square tube station literally across the road from it, its in a really pretty area of London and on the Picadilly line if you're getting the tube, so easily accessible. You could walk to covent garden easily from there and even on a night out in London when the tube was closed on our way home we got a cab from Picadilly and it only cost 8.00 at early hours of the morning so not bad at all! There is people on reception 24/7 for any problems. And there is a tesco metro right opposite russell square tube station so a minutes walk from the hotel for any convenience items you need. Didnt find the hotel noisy at all, other than the breakfast team the rest of the staff were really friendly and helpful with directions etc. No fridge or Iron in the room, Irons maybe on request from reception im not sure. Altogether this is a lovely place to stay and i wish someone would have explained all this in a review when i was looking so thought i would write one! Dont expect the ritz as its far from it lol but for the price... it was much better than i was expecting, its very basic, but comfortable and has everything you need for a short stay. I would definately recommend it and definately stay again :-)
