“Definitely not 3-star quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

Staff members were very unfriendly and not helpful at all.. Breakfast is terrible here, the selection was scarce at best.. No wi fi connection as well.. Plain and simple, it just wasn't worth what we paid for it

I went to the hotel for a college visit to London, and to make sure that I didn't get charged for damages that I hadn't done, I decided to look around and make a list of the faults. The room had a broken bathroom door lock, graffiti on the wall, burn marks on the seat and a broken hair dryer. Then in the morning to my despair I was awoken by a cleaning attendant just letting themselves into room without knocking at 7:30am. The staff down in the Reception were very helpful though and the hotel is situated very close to a tube station and a shop.

Emmmm where to start... There seems to be plenty of staff" hanging around" but helpfulness is not something they get paid for... i felt bad interrupting their behind the desk conversations. The rooms and hotel remind me of my days of backpacking in Europe in cheap hostels, just basic and plain.. No Internet service except in the lobby where you have to pull a piece of paper out of a cardboard box and cross your fingers the log in and password work for you or you have to keep trying different log in's....Yes we are in the 21st century but I guess this hotel sits in an Internet time warp.
Plenty of student groups who spent most of their evening running along the corridors and screaming and playing in the elevators.. How I know, I heard them from my basic, room with quite large stains on the cover.. The sheets seemed clean however I slept in my sweat pants on the bed with no cover just sheets.... Stains seem to have that effect on you... I only stayed one night and gladly left early morning after the cleaning lady kindly knocked on my door at 7:45am to ask me when I was leaving... Nice eh! So unfriendly, no nice, thank you, come again... Just a really who cares kind of attitude... I recommend paying a little extra to stay where you at least feel welcome... I work in the industry and I say a very large FAIL goes to the hotel and team for their total disregard for their customers..

Room Tip: I looked at 4 rooms and they were all the same... Ugggggg

I used to live in the UK and now live in Australia, came back for a holiday with my husband and booked all our accomodation from Australia before we arrived in the UK, looked on trip advisor to check hotels before i booked them and this one had mixed reviews, some people had written really bad comments about it and because the price was right and the location seemed perfect i took a chance... i must say it was LOADS better than i was expecting it to be! Because of the mixed reviews i was expecting it to be run down and really shabby, it was a bit tatty on the outside of the building but the entrance lobbys are lovely and it has fantastic facilities, there is a pub attached to the outside which is part of the hotel, a pizza restraunt right inside the entrance, a bar in the hotel lobby, internet and charging stations, a concierge that dont charge to hold bags when you're checking in and if you arrive early you can leave your bags there and go for a wander and come back to check in, there is a shop selling touristy things in lobby also, a restraunt, room service available, the concierge will also hold your bags when you check out but charge a small 50p a bag to do so. The check in staff are really friendly and helpful, the hotel is huge and has a really large breakfast buffet room. Breakfast is included in the price but i must say this is the only thing that let the experience down for us... it was sort of like a cattle market very basic, staff a bit unfriendly and seemed fed up to be there, very loud and noisy and not much choice, very basic tea, coffee, juice and some tinned fruit, and toast already toasted sitting in a basket under a heat lamp to keep warm with a few spreads. There was the option of upgrading to the cooked breakfast but this cost 5.00 pounds. We decided not to as there is a lovely little cafe just next to the hotel on the same side about 2 units up and they are very reasonably priced and have a fantastic range of foods, vegetarian options, fresh homemade soups, cooked breakfasts, salad bar to take away which we found handy for packed lunches when off sight seeing! Cold and hot drinks, really friendly staff. Also there was internet facilities there and another 2 shops up is an internet cafe, where its only 1.00 for 20 minutes and printing is 20p a sheet. Free wifi in hotel lobby but not in rooms... Back to the hotel, if you put breakfast aside as thats not really what you judge a hotel experience on as it is possible to book the rooms without breakfast... hotel room itself basic but had everything you need, clean towels, spacious, double bed is on request as most of the rooms are standard twin, but we stayed here 3 times and all 3 times we requested a double the staff did everything they could to provide it. The bathroom was clean, fresh clean towels, extra bedding if you need it in the wardrobe, soaps and shower caps etc provided, no shampoo or conditioner however, so need to bring your own, 2 out of 3 of the rooms we stayed in had a hairdryer (this may be on request also, if you want a room with one in you may have to ask) views were fine, we had the BT tower out the window the first night which was cool all lit up at night, the 2nd 2 times we had a view of the little garden courtyard in the centre of hotel. Heating in the room was great, very warm, big radiator under the window, flat screen tv on the desk, kettle, tea and coffee, milk etc provided, plenty of space to put things, desk, chair, bench, wardrobe... lamps etc. It was PERFECT for an over night stay to go out in London or do some sight seeing. Its a wonderful location, its a 2 minute walk from Russell Square tube station literally across the road from it, its in a really pretty area of London and on the Picadilly line if you're getting the tube, so easily accessible. You could walk to covent garden easily from there and even on a night out in London when the tube was closed on our way home we got a cab from Picadilly and it only cost 8.00 at early hours of the morning so not bad at all! There is people on reception 24/7 for any problems. And there is a tesco metro right opposite russell square tube station so a minutes walk from the hotel for any convenience items you need. Didnt find the hotel noisy at all, other than the breakfast team the rest of the staff were really friendly and helpful with directions etc. No fridge or Iron in the room, Irons maybe on request from reception im not sure. Altogether this is a lovely place to stay and i wish someone would have explained all this in a review when i was looking so thought i would write one! Dont expect the ritz as its far from it lol but for the price... it was much better than i was expecting, its very basic, but comfortable and has everything you need for a short stay. I would definately recommend it and definately stay again :-)

A huge hotel with hundreds of rooms, this is never going to be a luxury break or intimate stay. Having said that, beds are comfy, sheets are clean crisp cotton, and the en-suites are clean with plenty of hot water. It's a bit like staying at a student hall of residence, without the annoying know-it-alls. The hotel is very handy for Northern rail terminuses and central London, so for the money, you can't really ask for any more. The continental breakfast is adequate: plenty of luke warm toast, buns, croissants, cereal, fruit, etc. so if you don't want to pay the extra for the full breakfast, you will still be able to fill yourself. Perfect for the simple "place to go to sleep at night". I would definitely stay again, when the need arises.

The hotel is situated very near the Russel Square Underground Station and you also catch buses from infront the hotel or also at other near bus stops.. We were booked with Intercontinental Breakfast but it is awful and did not bother to go down for breakfast the second morning.. The rooms are tidy and you also not very small but another couple who were friends of ours had their room smaller ..

Stayed here a week while in London leading a small group of students on an archaeological seminar. Very convenient to the British Museum, and right by an Underground entrance, so essentially convenient to everywhere else in the city. Compared to other places I've stayed in the city (notably the Generator Hostel, a true nightmare), the staff, Wi-Fi, water pressure in the shower, etc. were all above par. The breakfast is a dry cereal nightmare but the beds are a dream and the rates are a bargain, so if you're trying to see the wonders of London for less than thirty Alterian dollars a day, this is likely your best bet.

BONUS: For cinema-lovers, it's a two minute walk from the Curzon Renoir Cinema, which is, as far as I know (and perhaps I know bunk) is one of the the only decent places to catch a movie in the city. There's also a bowling alley/nightclub that apparently has karaoke on the same block, so that's something to consider.

Room Tip: Theoretically you can get internet service in your room if you stay on the first floor, south side...
