We, couple of 58 & 60 from Switzerland, stayed three nights at the Grand Royale Hotel Hyde Park in Early December 2012 to do our Christmas Shopping.
The location of the hotel is ideal, as within less than 5 minutes two underground stations (Queensway and Bayswater) can be reached and there are plenty of busses running along Bayswater road making a trip to Notting Hill, Marble Arch and beyond very easy. Kensington Gardens is also no more than 100 m from the hotel.
The Hotel has definitively a lot of charm with a rather unusual lobby which reminded us more of a stately home than a hotel. Our room faced to the street, but there is hardly any traffic so you can get a good night's sleep. The room itself (we had a superior double) was really tiny. I did stay at other hotels with small rooms, but this seemed smaller than ever before. The room was however nicely furnished and the pictures shown on their homepage are identical to what you get, except that that the space is not so obvious. As there is no space to store your luggage your suitcase(s) take up valuable space and neither is there a sufficiently large wardrobe. Despite a comfortable bed, a modern TV, tea-maker and a modern bathroom, I rate the room as just ok, simply due to it's size.
The full English buffet breakfast offers everything you wish for and is included in you room rate. The service is friendly but depending on the time you choose to eat, there are not enough seats available and queuing for a free table is required, but I guess this just gives you the real English feeling.
It is fair to say that the hotel offers good value, considering it is Central London. Many other hotels would charge more. As we stayed for 3 nights, the hotel also offers a discount, again something not found too often in city hotels in Europe.
There is a bar in the hotel, but on the two occassions we entered it was completely empty and we chose to frequent a nearby pub, which there are plenty to choose from. The same is true for dinner meals. The area is very cosmopolitan and any fancy you may have is catered for.
To summarize: Hotel with an excellent location and good value for money (considering it's London), very small but modern room with facilities and with English breakfast included in room rate.
