“Good example of a local 'boozer'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012 via mobile

Not far from the packed tourist pubs of Borough market, this is a cosy local near Borough tube station which remains unchanged by passing fashions. If you intend to eat, the food is wholesome and well cooked, like braised oxtail . They have a dark mild which is a bit of a find down south and the pub is mercifully free of music or fruit machines .

“Community local with superb beers and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

This is a quiet but busy community local where people can meet and talk without being bombarded by piped music or television. They have a full range of excellent Harvey's beer, always including the mild, best and pale plus seasonal brews and a Fuller's guest. The menu is one of the best I have seen in a pub. Good value, large portions, and often including unusual pub fare such as grouse, partridge, hallibut , rabbit and hare.Unlike a lot of pubs there is also a substantial portion of vegetables served with each meal. The staff and management are friendly & efficient, and always ensure a warm welcome. This is my favourite pub in London.

“Superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012

I've been visiting the Royal Oak for several years, and it's definitely my favourite pub in London. Rarely over-crowded, no jukeboxes or television - just wonderfully kept beer and great food. As a Lewes native, I'm pretty snobby when it comes to Harveys, and the Royal Oak offer the best selection I've found outside of Harveys' hometown. The food - whether bar snacks or complete meals - is excellent and reasonably priced. The service is friendly but not over-bearing. And it's often pleasantly quiet, so you can actually have a proper conversation while savouring a pint or two. As close to perfection as London pubs have to offer - this is a true classic...!
