“Upstairs Downstairs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2008

We had booked for four nights at the beginning of our month-long UK trip, and then another three nights at the end.

On our first stay we had a room on the top floor. The staff member told us it was the largest in the hotel. And while the room was comfortable, it wasn't huge. However, the high ceiling and tall windows, looking out onto the street below, made it feel quite spacious.

Not so spacious was the bathroom, The shower was so small, that when I dropped the soap, I couldn't bend over to pick it up, or reach it by bending my knees! Okay, I'm 6'2", but I'm skinny. A beefier guest would have hardly any room to move. Then there's the toilet. In this bathroom it was mounted on a raised section, which meant a short person (like my 5'2' wife) could not put their feet on the floor while sitting on the loo. Not a comfortable way to go.

The breakfast room was pleasant place. Even though the tables are small and the hot breakfasts were not as scrumptious as some we had in country areas of England and Scotland. We were fascinated by the 'dumb waiter; a very old rope-controlled device for bringing the meals up from the basement kitchen, and returning the dishes down for washimg. It is something we had only ever seen in the Upstairs Downstairs television series.

On our return visit, we had a room at the back. It had been renovated and was not as 'Victorian' as the previous room. And while it didn't have much of a view, at least the bathroom was a lot bigger and quite modern.

The staff at the hotel are friendly and pleasant, and always made us feel very welcome. Like most hotels situated this close to the major attractions of London, the room rates are far higher than what you would expect for the standard of the premises. However, that is the price you pay for staying in one of the best areas of London (Belgravia) and being in walking distance from the places you must visit.

  • Liked — Good area and in walking distance to the main attractions in London
  • Disliked — Some rooms need a makeover

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2008

I stayed at the Lime Tree on July 23 and 24, 2008. My room looked out onto the small rear garden complete with flowers – very soothing after a busy day. An exhaust fan blew most of the evening from the restaurant next door, but did not prevent me sleeping soundly. I did not hear any creaking or noise from other rooms as mentioned in some other reviews, and my room was directly off the stairwell. See other visitor photos for a view of the door of this room, # 1.

The staff were attentive, and helpful. Breakfasts were sufficient to last into the afternoon. Fresh-made bread was passed around for a friendly, homey touch. The location is very busy, but offers easy travel connections through Victoria. I caught the Gatwick Express the morning I left only a few minutes after leaving the Lime Tree. There is a handy supermarket in Victoria and a wine bar next to the hotel that was non-intimidating to a woman traveler on her own. I hope to visit Lime Tree again and take more time to explore the area.

This is not a 5 star hotel--so don't expect it. If you go expecting a charming, updated 3 star boutique-style hotel, you'll be in the right frame of mind. There are no elevators, but we knew this beforehand. We got lucky and had room 11 on the first floor. We were worried about noise, but we didn't hear a peep, nothing at all, and we stayed six nights. This old building (1800's) has been updated over the years. Each room has a bathroom (nice tile, glass, etc) that was added after the fact, so apparently some of the rooms were small. We had a queen and twin combo, and it was a lovely size room with a view of roses out into the courtyard. We left the window open every night, put the fan in the window, and haven't slept so peacefully in years. The moon glowed onto the silvery wall paper in the room, crown moldings around the ceiling, 12 ft high ceiling, formal draperies--my husband and I felt like we were in a scene from Peter Pan--very charming!

The hotel staff is wonderful. This is a family owned business, passed down to a lovely daughter and her husband. All the employees were extremely helpful. Breakfast was ok. I learned to order the egg "poached" instead of scrambled, and all was well with the world.

Location is amazing. You border Belgravia, one of THE most elite neighborhoods in London. The tube is a block away at Victoria Station. Great restaurants, shopping, you have it all within a very short distance. Get yourself a "travel card" on your first day, and you can travel the tube and buses all over town.

Highly recommend this hotel for the money. We would definitely stay here again.

  • Liked — The charming atmosphere--staff and room. The location was amazing.
  • Disliked — Would like more choices at breakfast.
